P183 and its two fans

Post by qpc » Tue Jan 26, 2010 10:56 pm

I got my Silent PC up & running.

Antec P183
i7-860
Noctua NH-U12P SE2
ASUS P7P55D
4GB, 1.35V
VelociRaptor 300GB
Seagate Baracuda 500GB
Gigabyte GT9800 Silent
SeaSonic X-650W Gold
Pioneer Blu-ray writer
Windows 7 Professional 64-bit

All is good but the humming from the two P183's fans that I don't want to listen to, even at low speeds.
So I shut the top one. It's better, I still (barely) hear the back one.

I guess I can turn the back one off too, and watch the temperatures (they're now below 40 for both CPU and GPU, WD is below 40 too, Seagate 42)

I get that the humming is not from the fan itself but simply because of the air flow.

Would different (maybe smaller) fan make it better? Is the mesh causing air to produce this sound?

Thanks

Don't go with a smaller fan.

Look at the SPCR recommended fan list.

Typically a Scythe, Noctua or Nexus fan running at 7v will be a good bet.

Although not SPCR tested or recommended, I use Arctic Cooling 12025 PWM fans, because they are cheap, allow you to daisy chain the PWM fans, and are inaudible in my PC up to 700 rpm (the fans are the only moving parts in a fairly open case) , but can all speed up automatically to 1500 rpm under heavy load (I have trouble with speedfan, which would also allow you to achieve this).
