Corsair 600Q and 7200 trs/min HDDs

Hi all,

I'm currently part listing for a new computer and I'm very tempted in getting the new Corsair 600Q for both its look and its quietness. I'm a photographer and I need space for my RAWs (800GB-1TB a year with a bunch of heavy Photoshop files too), that why as much as I'd like it a full SSD configuration is out of question. However, having a 512GB or 1TB SSD for my latest project and a big HDD (4 to 6 TB) for the rest seems a good solution. Of course, I'd prefer a faster HDD...

My question is the following: will the 600Q's damping and anti-vibration HDD mount allow me to use a faster 7200 trs/min HDD like a WD Black virtually noiseless, or should I stick to a quieter model like a WD Red? Do you guys have some experience with the 600Q and a faster HDD?

Thanks in advance!

WD Blacks are noisy no matter what, i personally don't recommend them unless you do need them. WD reds will have slightly lower specs, mostly on the latency, but it would still be my suggestion, although recently some people have also express that the reds having high seek noise on newer models (i haven't experience it). But this is something you have to decide on your own, for me 7200rpm drives are no longer recommended, specially with SSDs, but each of us have different needs and only you can decide what we sacrifice between performance and noise.

In time if you need more storage, i would suggest to consider an external NAS that you can place it where you cant hear it and leave you pc without hdds, todays high end consumer offerings are pretty nice, i like a lot Synology and Qnap, but you can build your own if you wish, even with multiple lan ports to sustain higher throughput over the networks.

Thanks for the feedback.

I have a Synology NAS already, but I use it for backup, the throughput is not enough to work comfortably with large PSD files, even on Gigabit Ethernet.

It seems you've just made my day! Let's see how much it'll cost in Europe :)

Hi all,

A short follow-up: I've bought the 600Q (great case!) and a 4TB WD Red. Performances are good enough when accessing photos from the HDD (anyhow, Lightroom's catalogs and preview caching are done on the SSD) and the drive is absolutely silent in this case. If I use very big files, I can move them in my "work in progress" folder on the SSD. It will do the trick until very large SSDs are available at an accessible price :)
