What can i use to dampen my case?
Hello.
other then those dampening kits that
cost 30+$ and then shipping from UK->Israel
that will bankrupt me.
what kinds of matrials can i use to dampen my case?
i don't mind some hard work or adding even 10 kilos to my system
I'm just looking for some matirials that can be EASILY found in reguler shops.
thankyou.

Depends on the types of noise you are trying to get rid of, and what you are trying to do. There are two main noise types and each needs a different treatment, I would reccomend doing both in order to get the best results.
1. Resonant noise - Usually caused by fan or HDD vibrations being transferred to case metal, which then resonates in sympathy with the vibration, amplifying it. Best cure is to decouple the vibration sources from the case, which reduces the amount of vibration to be resonantly amplified. Second cure is to add mass to the case metal so that it's resonant frequency is lowered to below hearing frequenccy range. I recommend 'Asphalt Roofers Tape' (search for threads on it) as the best low budget treatment. If looking for other alternatives, look for sound DAMPING materials.
2. Radiated noise - noise coming directly from the noise generator (again typically a fan or HDD) The cure is to absorb the noise before it can escape from the case. As reccomended elsewhere, heavy foam carpet underpadding is reccomended as the cheapest widely available material. If looking for other alternatives, look for sound ABSORBING material.

i've pretty much finished dampening my case using
a couple of small carpets and i had the carpet side
face the case. (the back of the carpet is visible when i open the case)
i did so to avoid having loose carpet bits all around the case
i don't know if using it the other way around is more efficet
only that it seems to me to be more messy

i think it not only makes it more messy but i think carpet has more potential for static electricty.
right now i have dynamat (leftover from a friend) on the main panels in my case. is that enough or do most people recommend more layers of different material?
what kind of carpets are people using? the only kind i can think of has the knetting on the bottom. most homeowners have pieces of this leftover from having their houses recarpetted. is this the kind of carpet people are using?

heck, i have one of those "cushy" mouse pads - the stuff they use allso in wetsuits, (neporene?) i just sat the tower up there on it (after i cut the pad in half to spread the load) and for a $2 mouse pad the results are great! its killed all the vibration noise - now i gotta work on getting my PSU to shut up....

on the idea of water...why is there not a vinyl water jacket, or something to toss over the case that would quiet things down...or how about the next step, water jacket - but circulating to some sort of radiator... water jacket (quiet) cooling?

Roofing tape (asphalt or bitumen, aluminum foil). Search the forum.Black-Dawn wrote:what kinds of matrials can i use to dampen my case?
lenny: where did you get that pic? do you know of the product? I want one
edit: i found a review of it here but as it's only for lianli cases i don't think i'd be willing to cough up the extra dough.
very nicely done though
