Antec Super LANBOY

Does the Antec Super LANBOY (under Specialty) have a start for a quiet chassis?

I cannot tell how the front intake works or how open it is, but it has some of the same features as the Antec Sonata (rubber grommets, 120mm fan design, a front door to cover up the optical drive bays).

It seems like people are more focused on the P160, but I'm somewhat interested in the Super LANBOY as well, even though the design is somewhat out of my taste.

The Antec SLK3700BQE has all those same features (rubber grommets, 120mm fan design, a front door to cover up the optical drive bays), but with a higher quality case and a lot less bling. Check out the review here at SPCR.

Oh, yes I know about the SLK3700-BQE.

I'm a little worried about that side panel problem that you mention though, and I wish they would sell the case without a power supply (I would replace the one that is included).

One of the reasons why I was considering the Super LANBOY was because it's aluminum, not because I believe that it has better cooling potential, but because aluminum is nice and light. I may be moving my case around a lot, and the Super LANBOY's construction makes it very light.

And I'm not too sure about the P160 just because of the price. It's still probably a good deal compared to Lian-Li or Cooler Master, but I'm not sure if I'd be willing to pay more than $100 for a case without a power supply unless it comes with substantial extras (like the GMC Neo Classic and the anti-vibration pads/silicon dampeners/clamshell/etc.). I sure wish that the GMC Neo Classic (also known as the StarTech Black Silent ATX case) had better air intake in the front. I'd probably jump on it then.

I am interested in this case. I would like aluminum for the same reason.

It even comes with a free case-carrying strap! It's meant to be taken around to LAN parties and such, even though I probably won't do that anyway.

Hopefully it looks better in person just like the Antec representative said about the P160.

Ralf, when you say "higher quality case", you mean steel rather than aluminum? Have you seen the Lanboy or is steel just inherently higher quality than aluminum?

Does the SLK3700BQE look as plastic-y in person as it does in the photos?

No, it's not a "steel vs. aluminum" issues, it's just in the design and construction of the case. The Lanboy isn't as well engineered as the 3700. The 5.25" drive cage setup is cheaper and flimsier, the internal drive cages aren't as well designed. The entire case is just more cheaply constructed and flimsier than the 3700. The 2600/Lanboy is sort of like a cheap $30 generic case with a different bezel/PSU and Antec name on them.

Well, the black bezel definitely does have a plasticky look to it, compared to the 3700AMB bezel. The black painted steel looks very nice though. I like the semi-gloos black better than I like the glossy dark silver-gray of the AMB. So it's sort of a toss-up. :)

Is it certain the structure will the same as the current lanboy? I only have the PDF file to go by. The regular version lacks the drive cage fan and incorporates floppy there.

But it's not easy to find a alu case with 2 x 120mm fans and all the quieting goodies. Not to mention front USB.

P160 is is a little much (price and starship looks, but I'd like to see one)

As of right this minute, Newegg claims to have the Super Lanboy in stock for $100 plus $15 shipping. There's a few interior pics here. I'd order one ASAP if you decided you actually want one, these things tend to disappear quickly from Newegg's shelves.

I would say that the advantages of the Super LANBOY over the sonata or SLK3700BQE are:
Aluminium (lighter than steel)
Power on switch is not hidden behind the door
Carry strap
No PSU supplied

Disadvantages are:
Aluminium (steel is a better soundstopper i believe)

Is it just me, or does that case look really *long*, like from front to back. It looks really big on the inside.

It looks really open and airy with a clean design toward the back panel and fan. The cages are a little uneven, but it has the 90* HD cage, which is good unless you compare against a removeable cage. It looks like there is good airflow through the rear grille and the HD cage.

It is only 16.5" high, about an inch higer than my A500, which is big consideration for me. It is no deeper than the A500, so I do not think it is longer. It does look roomy.

Newegg's had a nasty habit lately of squashing a lot of their pics. The proportions aren't really anything like that. Look at the pic on Antec's site. The proportions are ever so slightly :) different than the Newegg pic.

looks good

I think the super lanboy looks pretty good and it seems to have good airflow. It looks pretty promising for a quiet case. I think i'm going to buy one when frys starts stocking it because its aluminum (i go to LANs) and it comes with a strap.
What do u guys think?

Newegg has the Super Lanboy in for $80 w/$15 shipping. I just noticed that it has 120mm fans front and back where as the older model had only 80mm. Aside from it missing front firewire ports, I might end up picking up one of these instead of the P160 (been waiting for a review).

One should be forthcoming. Antec is starting to ship them.

I understand that there will be 120mm led fans. If undervolted, will the leds still shine?

Ooo, good question. I'm anxious to hear the answer to this one myself.

I've got an LED fan in my PSU (I got it as it allegedly had a built in variable speed control - Redstore were being less than accurate about that!). To quiet it down I fitted an inline resistor (56 ohm). I'd guess it's got about 5-6 v across it, and the LEDs seem to shine just as brightly as at 12v.

Ralf, will there be a review of the Super LANBoy as well?

Kind Regards

Ditto on the review. The price being at least $35 less than the P160, smaller size, and including a LAN carrying strap has me interested in this case. :D
