I modified my cooling slightly and now I can barely hear my computer. It's on pretty much all the time now (as opposed to just during the day), unless my wife turns it on.
Pics to come this week enventually.

Dutchmm!!!!!!!!

I had wanted to get to 1m before we left Amsterdam, but it just didn't happen, and then we had nearly two years with only a 56K dial up link - and even that only worked on wet Wednesdays after muck spreading; so the folding had to stop until mid August.

I shall have to stop again for a few hours some time this week - my wife is very keen I should repair one of the light switches on the floor where I keep the machines, And it is all one circuit for lights and power sockets.

And (which might take me a little longer than changing a light switch) I need to get my NVidia drivers working nicely with the latest Mandriva kernel. The last attempt resulted in a complete re-install of Spring 2010.1

But any interruption will be temporary .. although it is only autumn- expected temps this week from 11 to 26C (52 to 77F), the signs of imminent winter are beginning to appear. It gets soooo cold here (outside night time temperatures of -8C - that's 18F - are not at all unusual in December though to mid February) I am even prepared to forgive my wife's machine for its fan noise to get the warmth ....

TTFN

Mike

Hey, good to hear from you Dutchmm, glad that you're picking back up. I'm in the same boat, it's still getting hot during the day but down in the 50s F at night, so the power bill is going down slowly. Good luck with the drivers, it's always pretty touchy with linux.

Have you tried processor affinity?

 Since you are using some form of unix, Cordis, and running the wine smp client as well as the gpu, have you tried to bind the gpu instance of wine to one processor, and the smp ones to the remainder?

One of the things I remember from my days of working with big computers is that you lose a lot of your potential performance in a multi-tasking environment because the system is constantly swapping waiting jobs onto the processor, which means pushing others off.

I know (the hard way :-() that you only want one wineserver process running, but if you can keep the wine clients out of each other's way ...

Uptime is now 10 days ... that is a bit of a record with our power company ... so I haven't had a chance to try my luck with the X driver. I am quite p****d off about the problem I am having on that. Normally Mandriva recognises everything at the kernel level. And recently my only X11 woes were with the graphics tablet. But tout passe, tout lasse, tout casse; there are rumours they are going to disappear  I have been trying out various alternative flavours in a VirtualBox, but I haven't found an answer I really like yet.

sigh

Yeah, I'm running ubuntu on a couple boxes. Well, I was, I finally broke down and installed an old copy of vista on my i7 980x box. I had 9 drives installed in the box, so I just swapped the bios order and installed it. If I'm going to be running the gpu and smp jobs in wine, figured I might as well just bite the bullet, and hope they switch bigadv folding back on for linux soon. It did give me a little opportunity to use some windows OCing tools to drive the clock rate up a little. I still have one machine left running ubuntu, I have it running bigadv in wine, but I shut down the gpu on that machine. I should still hit my 66kppd+ goal. Well, actually over the weekend I turned on one of my backup machines to pick up the slack while I did the install and did a drive swap on another machine. And that picked up a bigadv job, so now I have 3 bigadv jobs running. They're all due to finish tomorrow at the earliest, in the meantime I'll be chugging along at fairly minimal ppd. Should all average out. Gah, I wish this stuff was all simpler.
