Guys,

Hello. I just finially decided to join FAH after realize I have a good amount of computing power. So, I need some help here.

I have 8 P4's at work that is just setting there doing nothing. 99% of the time, they are off. I want to fold using these computers but our firewall blocks access to get WU. Is there anyway I can download the units from home and run them on this computers? I would perfer to manually download it as a file at work and just run them on the workstations.

Also, at home, I have a HP server with dual Xeon HT 3.0 GHz. It shows up as 4 processors in the task bar. Can I run 4 console on this server or just 2? I read in Maxium PC that I could. Anyone tried with an HT P4?

In addition, I have an old file server that is a dual Celeron 550 (overclock from the 300). What kind of WU I can expect out of this? Should I even try to run FAH on this server?

Thanks.

What you can do is run extra instances (in seperate directories, with different IDs) to get WUs. Then close the extra instances and Email/FTP/USB-flash-drive the files to the other PCs and load them in to work through. Once completed transfer the files back and restart the extra instances of the console to upload the results and get your points. It's a laborious job but should work. Check that you can actually run F@H as the port may be blocked for a reason (previous virus/torjan or unconvinced IT guy).

I haven't got a HT or dual core or dual CPU PC, but I'd think you can run 4 instances at once. Make sure they're set to use a CPU each though. I think that can be done in Task manager.

It'll work through some units. Fairly slowly, but nonetheless get through them. If you select the smaller protiens and not to have deadlines you can work through them at a reasonable rate and keep the points coming in.

Yeah. The firewall is blocking the port(s). I try to put in the proxy information but that didn't seem to work either.

If they are blocking the site, that might be indicitive of a policy against the use of company resources for that type of activity.

You might want to get permission from your manager to cover your hind-quarters in the event the wrong person finds out what you are doing. It is likely grounds for dismissal.

I don't think they are blocking the site. I could get to stanford site just fine. I think is a port or maybe my proxy setting. There is a script that runs as part of the proxy in the IE settings but no place to put that script in F@H.

It would be an issue with my managers since the machines are manage by me and they are doing nothing except wasting away slowly. My manager agrees with me that there should be something done with them. The problem is that they are use for creating new image, testing, and sometimes support when new requirements are issued.

Guess I have to try harder or get to know someone on the security side to help.

I wish I could help you on this, but I am soo dumb when it comes to firewalls and networking. Maybe you could find help here, it is the forum for the entire folding comunity, gets a lot of traffic. Many knowlegeable people there. Good luck on this, post back with a follow-up so we can maybe learn something too.

Good luck
