This works on most harddrives, regardless of the controller.
HDDScan is great if your SATA controller is supported, useless if not.

As JH Hoffma proposed;
The Hitachi HD Feature Tool is very simple -(pretty save, As I recall it didn't do things to a HDD that weren't supported by the HDD)-
It is indeed bootable, moreover, it's only bootable.
Since I guess no one likes floppies anymore, There is also an *.iso-version, which may be burnen on a CD, legally

Indeed, I only have one floppy drive in my house. An external USB one, and since all mobos nowadays have boot-to-USB (floppy) options in the BIOS, I'll never have one again!
