Corsair HX520 most silent PSU to buy?

Post by Milzit » Sun Jul 29, 2007 1:49 pm

I have today a Hiper Type-R 580W. Its realy the part of my computer that make most noise. In a test I read it was running at 30 DBA, and it has high frequent noise that realy iritate me. My CPU is AMD 4800+, and Geforce 7900GTX graphic card, and one hardisk.

After reading the recommened power supplies page here the Corsair HX520 was rated 8+ with noise.

Is the the mose quiet PSU I can buy for my computer?

It's as quiet as the Seasonic S12 ( it's made by Seasonic ), modular, highly efficient, enough power for about any computer and it's yellow ! I can't think of a better power supply. That's why I bought it.

I'm surprised no-one mentioned the buzzing issue: link. it's unlikely you will be affected by this, but you should be warned.

Thank you.
Maybe I should go for the Seasonic S12 430W instead? 430W should be enought anyway..

I have several (3+) S12's, no buzzing, flawless quiet PSUs, highly recommended.

I don't think you should worry to much about buzzing. My HX620W doesn't have it and I can't say I've run into anyone being plagued with this widely. It must be with those having very silent PCs in that case.

With your system, you need no more than an S12 430. It would even run fine on a 380.

I finally switched myself to the HX520 since the NeoHE I purchased was far too loud (and the Corsair was on sale!!) I'd definitely recommend that for modular, and anything in the S12 series for non-modular.

I also ready the test of the new Corsair VX450W, but in a test the amient noise level was 28 dba, but the Seasonic S12 has 17 dba, so I guess the Seasonic would be most silent for me. I guess a can live with a non- modular PSU, even if I have that today on the Hyper PSU. The Corsair HX520 is 2 dba more noisy than the S12, but it not make any difference. But after reading all the post about the whining, I think I will go the for the S12. And the price is cheaper also.

Modular - non-modular???? Eh, please help me? I have no idea what you guys are talking about :(

I am interested in the HX530 to run my system when I change cases... but not sure what all this modular stuff is about. Quick google search found nothing and searching the forums it is just discussed as a understood technology, never explained.

Anyone care to share?

Modular cabling is that there are detachable plugs for all the cables [Molex Plugs, Sata Connectors, PCI-E, etc] so that you only have the cables plugged in that you need.

For example, my corsair power supply has 5 or 6 modular plugs for Molex/Sata connectors, as well as 2 PCI-X connectors.

I'm using 2 sata connector plugs, and 1 Molex connector plug, and 1 PCI-X connector, while the other wires remain detached to keep it neat.

You can search for power supplies with modular cabling on newegg here

Silence would imply you can't hear it at all, if that's what you're looking for go with a passive power supply. Otherwise, the HX520 is a great unit considering the manufacturer(seasonic) and the cabling. The only issue I have with it is that it's much more power than I'd ever need, so I wouldn't be loading it to the point where it's efficiency is high.

What is the efficiency curve of the HX520?

I'm not sure, I was just speaking for my system. Under load it barely draws 150W, ~28% of the Corsairs rated output. I'd rather be around ~50% or more.

I have already two case fans (Sorry, I don't know the dimension) that I started this summer when it was so hot here, becuase the computer started to freeze.. :D Also I my Raptor-X harddisk in mounted in a rubber fitted 5 1/4" bay with a fan. The AMD 6400+ is cooled by a Zalman fan.

Should it be enougt air flow to use a passive PSU?
