Low Frequency Hum At Start-Up / Disappears Over Time?

Post by connmen » Fri Nov 30, 2007 6:38 pm

Howdy all. Wondering if someone can identify what this sound I'm hearing is.

When I first turn on my PC, for the first ten minutes or so, I get an intermittent low frequency hum sound that revs up and then stops. Then revs up and stops.

After about 10 or 15 minutes, it slowly starts getting quieter and quieter. And eventually, it goes away (or rather, just goes back to being the quiet low frequency hum you'd expect from the PC / PSU).

I definitely believe the sound comes from my PSU, which is a Seasonic S12 Energy +. I think it's vibration related as I can somewhat quiet it by pushing on the bottom of the PSU. But what makes me think it is not related to vibration is the fact that over time, it always goes away.

My back-up PSU, an Antec NeoHe, does the same thing but even louder.

Any ideas what exactly is the cause?

Many Thanks.
