P183 fan setup and further silencing

Post by tobee » Wed Jan 18, 2012 2:04 am

I numbered all the fans and spots to make it easy to discuss this setup
Image
First of all I will use it with drive bay 3 removed and all drives in bay near 5
Atm i have fans in 1,2,4,5( Arctic Cooling Fan F12 PRO PWM+ 3x Arctic Cooling Fan F12 PWM) in 6 i have cp-850 psu + noctua d14 with 2 fans 140+120(my old rig)
If I spin down all fans to 40% with speedfan there is still some noise.
Is it cp-850 fan or hard drives(4x samsung 500GB 7200/16MB) I will have to check.
For sure it's not graphic card(gigabyte 460gtx oc with custom fans from gigabyte).
I checked with msi afterburn going from 40 to 100 to check if that is the problem.

I plan to make 2nd rig with 183 but i want to make it even more quiet(if i succeed i might do the same with old one)
that would be
- i5 2500k
- some z68 board not decided yet
- msi 6850 cyclone
- 16GB ram
- 3 of those 4 smasung drive + eventually ssd
- cpu cooling eighter noctua d14 or Cooler Master hyper 212 plus
- psu i will have to buy one anyway cp-850 maybe (similar price to fully modular psu with lower wattage atm)

What I wanted to ask:
1
Is cp-850 fan in 6 enough to cool hdds alone or does it need some other fan to help pull the air?
If it does is it better to put it between psu and hdds or hdds and front door(5)
2
Is fan in 1 needed to push hot air out if you use 2 or 3(5,3,7) pulling fans
3
Will adding fan below DVD/BD drive help cooling cpu/ram and mobo?
Making whole bay air-tight at the same time ofc.
4
Does closing 2 and/or removing fan help the noise/raise temperatures?
5
Which parts are worth additional dampening with foam or other absorbing materials?
Front doors for example
6
Will making psu chamber completely separate from top one do any good?
7
Do air tunnels from cpu to the back of the case do any good to temps on motherboard or other parts
8
Do some of the modifications rise temperatures(decrease OC capabilities)?

Generally I love this case and had no problems with it so far but I want to make even better/more quiet build with a new one soon(v3).
This rig will stand on the floor under the desk in room corner.

Yes, it's enough to cool hard drives alone.

In theory you would have positive pressure, resulting in air pouring out the back of the case. But I think you should keep an exhaust fan in spot #1. :)

Slightly. Didn't make much difference for me (P182 with a Scythe Kama Bay). Even without a fan there, you can still feel air coming through.

It certainly reduces the noise, but it also raises temperatures a little as well.

Check out this DIY moduvent

Both side panels, the front door, and the top and bottom of the case.

In my experience, no. The hard drives will still get nice gentle airflow whether or not you seal the gaps between the top and bottom chambers.

Never tried that, but can't imagine it would be much use. I'm thinking of a tower CPU cooler, where the air goes straight out the exhaust vents anyway.

Blocking up the top vent will increase temperatures a bit, but I don't think the other modifications would make much difference. :)

Thanks a lot
I figured out that exhaust fan is the noisiest
speedfan doesn't change its speed at all:P
Will update it and see if it helps.
If not I will have to check where it is connected to.
