The most expensive decisions will be on the games you want to play and on the resolution that you want to play at. A 1080p system might run from $700 to $1200, a 2160p system might run from $1000 to $2000+ (not including the monitors).

List the games you want to play. Do a web search for benchmark reviews of them. Take a look at the CPUs/GPUs used in the reviews and the fps results at the varying resolutions. If the CPU/GPU combo consistently provides 60fps or better at the quality level you want (and turning all the quality knobs to 11 may mean you need much more gpu performance), then you've figured out a good baseline for today's games.

I'd say that $2000 is the starting point for 4k gaming.
For graphics it really takes an RTX 2080Ti or a pair of GTX 1080Ti at the same price. That's the first $1,400.
Then $600 is a very tight budget for the rest of the computer.

Gaming at 1080p is decidedly more palatable from a financial point of veiw, unless you have loads of money to burn.

I'll have to agree with Olle on the price point. While the mining craze has subsided, the lack of competition keeps high-end gaming costs up. I'd also advise against any SLI system, as they are more problem than their worth in gaming. Still, the budget is greatly dependent on your target games: CS:GO should be fine with a 1080 IIRC for 4K60, whereas if you want new games, especially with the new raytracing tech, that'll be a 2080Ti or waiting 'till next generation.

It really depends on the game. Something like WoW isn't very GPU heavy and will give 70+fps with Ultra settings @ 2160p with a $300 GTX 1060. That'll get you a $1200 (quick selection) build with the OS.

Sure, but then you don't need a "Gaming Computer" in the first place.
Being able to also play newer, near future, games of the type one likes is what matters.
... and then there are of course those that build a computer to run one specific simulator program and combine it with a full blown cockpit or equivalent. Then the peripherals are more costly than the computer.

Me too. I just brought it up as an example of what's been required until now. (The RTX 2080Ti is still in short supply.)
