Funny, I'm allied with those two as well! :P

None of my targets will be from Moavar race. They're going to be slaughtered in due time by Crucio anyway.. I'll just have to hope I arrive at his planet while his fleet are having a break!

Edit: Just got hit by Korriban after I tried to spy on him - fortunately I still had half of my fleet in Commerce and twice as much in construction, so I only really lost the Megaship. I've conceded that it isn't much better than 4 Anvils with similar maintenance requirements and four times the firepower... Anyone have lots of Interceptors or Bombers for sale? I can fit 200 until I build another airbase, they have a much better power-cost ratio and really clog up those capital ships.

OK, I'll give. Which planet is Rusty? I'd guess Love.

The recent space-time continuum anomoly put a crimp into several BigGuys' styles. Who is Publio who did such a job recently?

As always, great discounts to SPCR's, as long as you can keep it quiet....

Publius is a mercenary (who was just hired by Korriban after I wiped out most of his fleet). He gained prestige from attacking me but he could only rid me of FSDs, so his head should hang in shame.

(n.b. do I owe you anything from before, tragus? I've been busy recently and forgot - I'll have to check the news)

well I finished the wipping of his planet. It seems he pissed off another one of my ally's. I though crucio took him out.

If anyone needs some quick cleanup just shoot me a line i can get my hurricanes there in 1 turn and fsd's there in 2.

A little STFW and LIUOW led me to a show called MXC. THAT one led me to Takeshi's Castle and now I'm wondering if you were the that guy in the top 10 two rounds ago

That's what I wondered too. (By the way, we can get Takeshi's Castle on the old-gameshow-repeats-channel a.k.a. 'Challenge TV', but not MXC... a shame, since it sounds quite good.)

You made me break out the acronymfinder.com on that one.

Yes, it is very much an MXC reference. But no, that wasn't me using it a couple of rounds ago, although I was in the top ten. (I was "Ted Striker" last round... STFW for that equally obscure reference) I think I've been in the top 10 every round that I've played but one, and that was the Death Match round. This round will be a loser for sure....I'll be lucky to be in the 30's.

Nope, the game crashed. But the SR forum is still availlable.

See Ohmm's analysis site. There are no updates since 7:02 AM (CEST) today.

Last day of this round

Post by Tibors » Sat Sep 24, 2005 3:35 am

We entered the last day of this round of SR. Currently five of the top ten planets are played by SPCR-ians. Maybe DryFire has some trick up his sleeve to make that six? Or some outside force might kick one of the others out? in just 21 hours we'll know.

Post-facto SR

Post by tragus » Tue Sep 27, 2005 5:37 pm

Yay us (SPCR).

Yay me.

Thanks to burcakb for some final fireworks and vaulting into Top 10.

Time for SR withdrawal....

I had a blast, though the technical server problems were highly vexing. I spent far too much time at "that stupid computer game" (as my daughter came to call it). I'm surprised at the coalitions, and especially the lack thereof. A few disaffected players up and quit during this round (including a couple of BigGuys), which seems unusual. Lots of interesting suggestions for improvements coming out, though a few sound a bit whiney to my ears.

I was going to attaack someone and hopefully launch myself intothe top 10 then I was attacked by thamailion (or whatever his name was) and atlantis. I only need like 10,000 prestige before the attacks to make it.

The massive jump we had was the time when i was planning to build a lot of ships to have my own little mega fleet but that didn't happen.

Guess I'll try again next round.

It seems as if ohmm is leaving.

Valentines for DryFire?

Post by tragus » Wed Sep 28, 2005 8:03 am

Side note:

DryFire, I really don't know who your secret admirer is/was. That incident with the "food gift" was just me having a bit of a laugh at your expense, though I think we both were highly amused by the whole thing. I'm glad you had a nice sense of fun and humor. I'll leave it to you to explain, if you wish.

I do wonder, though...

Yeah, I probably won't be back for the next round.

I haven't decided about the analysis site. I may keep it going for another round, or I might shut it down.

If anyone would like the code, and would like to host it themselves, please let me know. I would be happy to help someone else get this up and running. Of course you get to put your own name and picture on the site. :D If nobody takes me up on this offer, I'll probably keep it going for another round as a gesture of friendship and support for the SR community.

I've decided to stop playing for several reasons:
  • :!: The game has been taking too much of my time. I really need/want to be doing some other things.
  • :!: I don't care for the combat aspects of the game, but the game seems to be becoming increasingly combat oriented.
  • :!: I have a difficult time following all the messages in the forum because of guest postings and different names used.
  • :!: The first couple of rounds I played (9 & 10) seemed to have a more mature group of players. With the large growth in planets this past round, I got the impression this maturity level was falling.
  • :!: The bugs and crashes in the game were frustrating. I appreciate Vorkuta provides this for free and is very busy, so I take it in stride. It would be nice if Vorkuta could have several people capable of responding to problems so the game doesn't go for days in a stuck state.

A recent SR forum post by Zippit indicates Vorkuta is busy working on version 2 of SR. Perhaps the next round in a couple of months will be the maden voyage of version 2, or perhaps there will be another version 1 round in the meantime. I suspect version 2 will be a much richer game, but very very beta.

I've had a blast playing, and I wish everyone the best of luck and good fortune in their future galatic exploits! And thanks to all the players, especially those allied with Ohmm, and all whom provided us with support and encouragement throughout the games. It is the human aspects that made the game so enjoyable and engaging.

Happy Planeteering!

Prince Volvo and all the friendly peace-loving people of Ohmm

Ohmm I think i could host it.

I"ve got about 500mb free and about 40gb's of transfer a month I don't use. But I know almost nothing about coding. I'll setup a small account if you want for you to transfer all the files over if you wouldn't mind. Just let me know what you need.

As for my admirier, I'm really curious. I know I deserver one  But i didn't know the food gift was from you but I did try to have fun with it.

Well I hope you come back at some point in the future... how about we bug you once version 2 comes around? :)
I'd offer to host it as well but my server has no cron job support (how about you, DryFire?). If I didn't have a bandwidth limit I'd even set up a home server, just so it could continue...

I don't know if i do or do not. Nor do I know where to check.

I'm pretty much web illiterate, except for html which i taught myself in like 1996. I do know some visual basic and C++ though.

You'll need to be able to set up cron jobs as StarfishChris mentioned, as well as have a MySQL database.

The cron is a scheduler program that runs on the host computer. If your host allows it, you would be able to send a simple text file to the cron scheduler telling it what scripts (programs) you want to run automatically, and on which days and which times. I have a script (program) that fetches the Galaxy Overview data from Stellar-Realms every day at 02, 22, and 42 minutes after every hour. Once this is setup in the cron, it happens automatically and I don't have to worry about it. Every time the script runs, the cron scheduler sends me an email detailing the output of the script (any messages I have the script output). Its important to capture the SR data every turn (every 20 minutes), and the cron scheduler will handle it automatically for you.

You'll have to ask your hosting company if they allow usage of the cron scheduler.

The analysis site also uses a MySQL database for storing the data from SR and some analysis data. Most hosts offer a MySQL database in their packages, but you might want to ask your hosting company about that too just to be sure.

The scripts (programs) for the site are written in the PHP scripting language. Most hosting companies include PHP scripting capability, but you should check that too.

You should be OK on disk space and bandwidth. I think for round 11, my database grew to around 25MB, and I used around 1.5GB of bandwidth per month.

Once the site is up and running, it doesn't need much maintenance. The only times in the past I have to fix things is when Vorkuta deletes a planet or changes a planets name. Those things screw up the database a bit, but can be quickly fixed once you realize what has happened.

I've probably made it sound more complicated than it really is. It's really fairly simple and easy to handle.

Of course, if you have any problems, just shoot me an email and I'll do what I can to help.

Direct admin lets me set a cron job so I'm assuming that I can. I'll create an account with with 50 MB's of disk space and 5 gigs of transfer (I have a reseller account).

I'll pm you the details, if you're willing to do the setup (I'm clueless).

that'll have to wait untill the mornig as it's time for sleep.

Oh, oh. DryFire will now be attracting new groupies AND be immune from unwanted visitors---all due to his newly acquired status as Editor-in-Chief of the Tabloid to the Galaxy.

You'd think his next incarnation will be Ruperzig Murstardochdust.

Alas, being Editor-in-Chief does not make one immune from unwanted visitors, as I found out in the last round. :(

However, it does give you the power to redirect the said unwanted visitor to another web site when he/she is trying to get to the analysis pages. If I were a mean person, I would redirect them off to a gay porn site, but then I'm not mea.... , hey wait, I am mean enough to do that!

I was only attacked once in three rounds, so I can't complain too much. I guess the analysis site does provide some immunity!

DryFire will make a great Editor-in-Chief!

Well, I'm reincarnated as the great queen of food--Julia Child of the Food Network. Don't worry about spying, Cheshire Cat. We won't let you disappear...

I recently saw an article about tattoos on professional chefs. My favorite was a portrait of Alice Waters (of Chez Panisse, California cuisine fame). The chef said he's planning to get two more; quote he, "After Alice, I'll add Julia and James and I'll have the holy trinity." (Julia=Julia Child, James=James Beard).

Dryfire, will you be ready with the Galactic Tabloid? You may wish to make an announcement to that effect.

I've reinlisted for another round of punishment. This time I'm the lovely and talented Kate Moss, of the appropriately named planet Snowdrift.

Maybe having a girl's name this round will keep me from being bombed again.
