but unfortunately what is left of the round is about 6-700 turns less than I need to research everything:(

from what i understand it's pretty much impossible to research everything.

If it is impossible it is because of resources... I've counted the time the rest of the research is going to take me and I ended up with a bit over 2000 turns... but then again... Dorune has some hefty bonuses to research....

If you are one of the four races with the real science bonus (Dorune, Moavar, Bengathi, Rool) then it is possible to research everything. I'll not be able to pay for Planet V, but everything else should be finished before 2950. Unless I get blown to dust again of course. If I hadn't been blown to dust before, then I would have done Planet V too.

Would it be wise, then, to research the first four Science topics at the beginning? Science V requires Construction III, Reproduction I and Sensors II, but by the time you finish Science IV you'll have at least a 30% bonus, and 44% just before you research. That's excluding race stats & structures (Dorune & Bengathi can have an extra 25%; Moavar & Rool get 23%). With a 79% bonus you can research everything else pretty quickly.

Yeah I'd do that and build the two research labs asap.

My usual pattern, regardless of race, is to start with the first 3 Science topics, to get the Labs done, and then do the research to get the Improved Labs. Then I work my way through Science 4 and 5. Usually after Science 3 I detour to get Sensors and Stealth out of the way so I can build Intel.

By this time last round I had all the topics done...including Planet V. But that was before Vork tweaked the Moaver special ability to stop them from being able to get over 100% research bonus

if you got over 100% bonus did you gain turns?

No, you didn't gain turns, but every topic only took 1 turn to complete. In the 36 months that the bonus lasted you could, for example; do all of the Planet, Offense, Defense, Construction, Materials, and Durability topics. The only trick was managing the materials needed.

It was an unintended bug, and once knowledge of it bacame widespread the Moavar became much too popular. In round 8 something like 3/4 of the planets were Moavar.

I've had problems to today. couldn't get any contact at all for a while and for a while both before and after that, I got to the "create new planet" screen instead of logging on. But that specific problem could be a feature of my tortured firefox. I've had the same program running for several days now...

Thanks guys!

I'm connected now.

I stopped and restarted FireFox but still could not connect. Tried Internet Explorer; same thing - could not connect. Could surf anywhere else on the Internet with no problems. I re-booted, and now all is well.

BTW... I always get the "Create New Planet" screen too. I think my cookies are messed up. I created my planet at home using the initial password SR sent me, then later logged in on my work computer and reset my password. When I got back home, I tried logging in, but could not as it was trying to use the old password stored in the cookie. I had to delete the cookies to be able to log in again. I think I deleted a cookie I should't have as I have had problems ever since.

i get the create new planet screen a few times when I'm told my session has ended, but no issues as to not being able to log in using firefox 1.0.3

I don't know - the Sha'goth can generate a lot of income with their hibernation caves. (You can build 4, for a total of 1 million pop. and 20% reproduction, and maintenance costs are very low) I'm going to try them next round and see how I fare.

My very limited understanding is that the Sha'goth do not generate prestige or income while in their hibernation caves. I suspect the caves serve to protect the population from bombardment during periods of war.

I've played the T'Chopt'Ka twice before. That 7% from the Plating Factory doesn't sound like much, but its noticeable. You can get some GREAT durability on stuff, and then their special ability boosts durability even further. And I loved their Tortoise Battleship instead of Dreadnoughts, very effective and very tough.

For you veterans out there...

is it worth it to research special 1? How much prestige does it give relative it's high cost (second to non except three of the planets-research)? How much prestige is a starbase givving/turn?

Well, I'm not a veteran, but...

As far as I have seen all research gives you more prestige points per turn than the bare resources needed. Can't find the exact prestige for Special I in all the stuff I saved and noted.

A starbase gives you 8,22 prestige points per turn for the building itself. (As with all structures: build prestige divided by 100.) Add one prestige point per turn for the inhabitants. (population divided by 10.000) If you put 50 Heavy bombers in the fighterbays, then you get another 7,5 prestige point per turn. (50*30/200)

There is nothing else that gives you more prestige per occupied orbital space, but it costs a lot of maintenance.

And don't forget the most important aspect of starbases: They can help keep the rest of your buildings standings.

Now that was alot of interesting information givven at once! Thanks!

Are you sure that bombers give 0.15 and not 0.1 prestige/turn like the fighters? Maintenance is the same, isn't it?

AFAIK the build prestige for ships is not listed anywhere. But if you destroy a ship, then your prestige loss is shown in the message.

So before I decided what type of airbase to build, I bought one of each fighter type from one of my allies (and that one lone drone from you). I dissected them:
  • 22 .. Fighter Interceptor
  • 20 .. Fighter Bomber
  • 28 .. Advanced Interceptor
  • 30 .. Heavy Bomber
  • 21 .. Scout
  • 30 .. Deep Recon Scout
  • 8 .. "Stinger" Drone
You have to divide these by 200 to get the prestige per turn.

Not to mention starbases have enough weapons and power to take ou just about any ship.

I dare not send my colossi against them.

Yeah, starbases are pretty awesome, remember they also house 10K people, support 50 fighters, and give 2 more construction slots. Pretty much a free improved habitat, improved airbase and enough yards to do whatever you want, with 4 or 5 of them. Don't really care about the prestige, been moving up quick though from combat prestige. Getting bored near the end of the round, waxed 4 planets in the last few days while figuring out combat mechanics.

Starbases on D:
A fleet of vessels from Deltaras attempted to perform a fighter screen at Love.
The attacking force was detected before entering the system.
The attacking force consisted of 40 Fighter Bomber(s) 40 Heavy Bomber(s) 40 Advanced Interceptor(s) 1 "Collector" Frigate(s) 4 Destroyer(s) 7 Cruiser(s) 8 Light Carrier(s) 10 Battleship(s) 1 "Dragon" Mobile Assault Platform(s).
The defending force consisted of 5 Starbase(s) 3 Orbital Bulwark(s) 3 Surface Shield Generator(s) 6 Surface Defense Battery (Improved)(s) 220 Fighter Interceptor(s) 350 "Stinger" Drone(s) 13 Light Carrier(s) .

three volleys later...
Attackers losses were 40 Advanced Interceptor(s) 40 Fighter Bomber(s) 40 Heavy Bomber(s) 4 Destroyer(s) 7 Cruiser(s) 10 Battleship(s) 8 Light Carrier(s) 1 "Collector" Frigate(s) 1 "Dragon" Mobile Assault Platform(s) and 32500 personnel.
Defender lost no units and 2000 personnel.
Defender lost 1 Starbase(s) .
Attacker lost 9432 prestige.
Defender gained 10199 prestige.

and on offense... was surprised by this one, expected to lose 80-100 fighters:

A fleet of vessels from Love attempted to perform a fighter screen at The Great Bucket.
The attacking force was detected before entering the system.
The attacking force consisted of 270 Fighter Interceptor(s) 20 Fire Support Destroyer(s) 18 Light Carrier(s) 10 Dreadnought(s).
The defending force consisted of 1 Starbase(s) 2 Orbital Defense Platform(s) 8 "Judicator" Dreadnought(s) .
Attackers losses were 57 Fighter Interceptor(s) and 57 personnel.
Defenders losses were 8 "Judicator" Dreadnought(s) and 15000 personnel.
Defender lost 2 Orbital Defense Platform(s) 1 Starbase(s) .
Attacker gained 5621 prestige.
Attacker lost 357 prestige due to the difference in planetary status.
Defender lost 5000 prestige.

I'll stil be plain ol' Gruarn...

I've been thinking about if we should be starting an SPCR-alliance. With all the backstabbing that went on last round, it would be nice to know who ones friends are. Besides, It would be nice to dethrown the usual suspects from the #1 spot:)
