Firefox/Firewall problem.....solved.

Post by Bluefront » Tue Nov 27, 2007 3:29 pm

So I was browsing a few minutes ago, and firefox automatically shut down on my main machine and installed an update to Foxy Tunes (I think). It usually asks to install updates when you first connect.

Since then, my dial-up works normal, but Firefox can not connect to anything (page not found). I'm typing this on another computer that does not have Foxy Tunes. Very strange.......

what was your latest firefox version?

mine's 2.0.0.9 but its downloading some new update to 2.0.0.10...

i hope my doesn't get messed up :?

but how come your firefox automatically shuts down and starts downloading...doesn't it prompt you?

usually firefox is a superb browser...i hadn't had any problems with it so far.

i doubt its a virus...but you can run a centralized virus scan to check (considering you have new virus software)

Well I already had the latest Firefox version, and the add-ons ask permission to update.....until this time.

Anyway.....I uninstalled FoxyTunes. No go. I removed all private data and rebooted....still couldn't connect.

Here's what happened....somehow Firefox got "X"ed out by Zone Alarm program control, on the fly, during that update. Strange....

I have also had problems with ZoneAlarm in the past.
ZoneAlarm is no good and not recommended anymore.

Mozilla Firefox is still very good. I love it.

If you want to keep yourself updated on firewalls and such I must advice you to check this link.

Agreed. I moved on from Zone Alarms years ago, after it caused more problems than I was willing to deal with.

offtopic, but I switched from ZoneAlarm (which has become bloatware and so on) to Comodo firewall some months ago. It is free and offers better outbound protection - it tracks both the program, which accesses network (eg Opera or IE) and the program, which launches second one (eg IE launched from taskbar is different from IE launched by some adware process).

Zone Alarrm has much more options then your regular firewall. It isn't quite as easy to use as most other firewalls. I still consider it to be the best free firewall out there.

I'm satisfied with my windows xp firewall.

P.S I think renaming of this thread might be in order...

I've found TrendMicro to be far more user friendly.

Zone inexplicably blocks things and is too paranoid for my taste.

Firefox has been buggy lately though.
