William "Willy" Higinbotham was the man, who created one of the very first 'computer' games with a graphical display in 1958, Tennis For Two, long before Pong. He created it on an oscilloscope.

Back in 1997, I decided to try out this newfangled thing called "the internet". I got an AOL account, and shortly afterward was stalked online by a mentally imbalanced female. So I decided to change my username to shake her off.

Right about the same time, I got hooked on this new game called Quake 2. I needed to come up with a gaming name so I could play online. I wanted a nickname that was dark and foreboding, to impress the gaming community.

I decided to kill two birds with one stone, so to speak, and use the same nickname for both. So, sitting there at the computer, trying to think of a cool nickname, I remembered a scary story my father once told me about a black tree that snatches up children and eats them.

I liked the name so much that I kept using it. Now, I use that nickname almost everywhere.

I almost forgot: I live in Florida, USA.

Sounds so familiar and all I see is names with the same idea behind it...

I can answer both questions with the same answer :)

I am in Vancouver Washington (yeah, those darn Canadians copied our name), and one day I needed a name, and kept getting name already in use, and so VanWaGuy was it.

Quake 2 was the game that got me started in the FPS genre... and PC gaming in general. 8)
