ECC is specially memory used mainly on servers to avoid certain errors that for the average pc user are not critical. Ryzen is a very picky platfrom for memory, thus i woulnt complicated more adding ECC to the table, just get what others are getting for the motherboard you chose.

if there were ryzen motherboards that support ecc and the premium for ecc is say 10%, why not?

Because its very likely that you will have issues with the memory, its not as intel, specially atm most AMD mobos are releasing bios updates, most memory have issues, either with the speed or incompatibilities, really its not like intel atm, its more to go with what works and forget the rest. But up to you, now that threadriper is coming out, im sure more memory compatible with AMD will be released, and this issue i expect to be almost solved by years end, but as of now, i would go with what works for sure with the motherboard you chose.

This issue was covered in depth in an article entitled ECC Memory & AMD's Ryzen - A Deep Dive published by Hardwarecanucks in March of this year.

In short, historically all AMD motherboards have had ECC memory support. But the settings to enable it, configure it etc may not be present in the BIOS. In addition, support from the Operating System is required. Using software to detect and diagnose ECC support is not straightforward, AIDA64 will probably give the answers.

very interesting. well i'm not planning to buy an amd ryzen right now, maybe in a few years

the issue is this

newegg
Kingston 4GB 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM ECC Unbuffered DDR3 1333 Server Memory Model KVR13LE9S8/4
$43.79
https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product. ... 6820239665

so for $43.79 you can get ecc memory

if it prevents games and apps from crashing it's certainly affordable

Typically modern motherboards use DDR4 memory so you would probably be looking at something like this. But even so the issue I think is not the cost but whether there is any practical benefit in using it in a desktop system where the main factor for most people is lack of Windows support. This may be because Microsoft want to differentiate between desktop Windows where ECC memory is unlikely to be present and whatever the current version of Windows Server is where the absence of ECC memory would be unusual.

$66.82 isn't so bad. not when gamers install triple sli nvidia which i won't do.

why not install windows server and use that as your desktop, play games etc :)

I've never had memory failure and I don't observe this to be a common problem, insofar as memory is compatible with the CPU/motherboard, from a reputable brand and not overclocked.

It depends on task being done, but the risk is so low and many apps have some kind of auto-save feature anyway.

Anybody who wants performance will, if at all possible, use the XMP setting and thus overclock the memory.

My own memory has an XMP rating of 3200 MHz and I've been able to overclock it from the default 2133 to 3066 MHz.
I'm not sure about the default speeds with the latest Coffee Lake CPUs though...

Yes, of course. :)
