CES 2019

Post by whispercat » Wed Jan 09, 2019 6:46 pm

So I watched the AMD keynote today and was a little disappointed with the lack of announcements. It looks like the new Ryzen 3000 series chips are not going to be coming out until the summer. No word on supposed Navi Radeon GPUs either.

It leaves me in a bit of limbo, as I had started buying parts for a new build, hoping new AMD CPUs would be just around the corner.
Now I'm not sure whether to wait or not. I probably will, that way if I feel the new CPUs are not worth it, I will simply buy the old ones (e.g. 2700X) which should be cheaper at that point anyway.

Anyone else hoping and waiting for certain tech or devices to come out of CES 2019?

I kinda was hopping for more info, seems AMD has a similar CPU to the 9900k, for what i saw maybe a little better, but close, but maybe its not as hot or hard to cool, but i have my doubts, no numbers or clocks, seems a little wierd, was more like a teaser.

The Vega II seems alright, 2080 performance but the $699 seems a steep up pricing, but its expected, now that Nvidia forced user to pay premium AMD will only undercut slightly, high end gpus will never return to the $500 mark, probably not even $600. Navi imo will be more aimed a mid to low end, probably the best might make it to a 2070/2060, thats what i think its possible, but i dont see AMD touching 2080Ti territory on Navi.

Now as always, build when you need it and what you can afford, something better will always be around the corner. If you have no need for it before summer, then wait, i most of the time dont wait, simply eats me inside =P

The best news from CES is Nvidia supporting Adaptive sync.... cant wait for the drivers.

I've had my current desktop for ten years, I can probably wait another 6 months. It will be inconvenient, but waiting will likely give me more options. The fact that the 3xxx chips will be backward compatible on the A4 socket is a huge relief, since I recently bought a X470 mobo.

I don't game, so I only need a mid-range card. The power sipping on the Navis looked impressive from the leaks. These cards could hopefully be good for a quiet energy efficient system. You're right though, it looks like the high end cards are never coming back down to the $500 level. NVIDIA has ruined that prospect.

Nvidia supporting the VESA Adaptive Sync spec was huge. Now I want to see more TVs (beyond high end Samsung) support it.

AMD moving to chiplet strategy for mainstream CPUs is interesting. Will be interesting to see power/thermals of small 7nm CPU die and whether it'll be thermal paste or solder for the IHS.

Navi and 7nm - I'm hoping it reverses the more performance by using more power trend we're seeing with GTX 2xxx and AMD everything.

2019 looks to be a nice year for commoditization of NVMe SSDs. Some of the end of 2018 prices were awesome.

Whispercat - what do you need a video card for?

Phanteks cases at CES. Very nice. I like the P600S the most. Interesting how cases are evolving and making little improvements every year, like Phanteks using nylon mesh now.

Steve: I just need a video card for video editing and some light 3d modeling.

Don't know what you need for resources/horsepower for the 3D modeling...but if all you need is a basic card, consider a used GTX 1050 2GB or GTX 1050 Ti 4GB. I'm pretty happy with the MSI GTX 1050 Ti Gaming X I got off of eBay for $100.

Maybe the Vega II could be a good option? what do you use to edit?

I haven't started editing yet, but I am looking at Cyberlink Power Director or DaVinci Resolve.

Steve, is the noise on that 1050ti good? When I did a recent build, I recall looking at the SCPR threads linking to 1060 and 1050ti reviews and it seemed like all the 1050ti's had poor fan control, so they ended up louder than 1060's (which many had good fan control). I ended up just going with iGPU (Vega 11) for now, but am still interested in a lower end GPU if it can be quiet.

I think this card is effing awesome. Here's a little bit of background. I don't think the fan has ever been on/noticeable.
