stock fan x800 pro [loud/not loud]?

Post by pychiquata » Fri Jul 30, 2004 12:30 am

After reading too many reviews for this card and no reviewer saying something usefull about noiselvl's here it comes:

How loud is the stockfan on a 'generic' X800 pro?

Seeing that a X800 doesn't draw much more power than a ati 9800 (http://forums.silentpcreview.com/viewtopic.php?t=14668) and seeing that the fan used on the X800 is pretty big (http://www.overclockersclub.com/images/x800pro/4.jpg[url]) my idea (and hope) is that it would run more silent than the tiny screaming little fans used on my old gforce2.

I'm not looking for a absolutely silent machine. I'm looking for a machine that does not drive me insane.

I have an x800 pro (ATI; have a Sapphire coming in a week or so), that was my assumption too, that the larger fan = more airflow and no whine. I can't hear its fan over anything in my pc even at max speed, but my pc is relatively loud atm (although nothing stupid like a vantec tornado or 5 fans). FWIW, my old GF4 with stock hsf was definitely audible in the same PC.

I have a Power-color X800 Pro VIVO coming next week. I'll let you know.

Just got it today.

Fan noise is a lower pitched sound, but it's definitely noticeable. Nowhere near the noise of those little screamer fans on the NVidia's, particulary the 5900 FX.

Overall, not too shabby, but I'll be modding it nonetheless.

Unfortunately, I could not unlock the 4 pipelines via BIOS flash. Doesn't work for me. :(

A friend of mine has an X800 Pro. You know a good Firware site where he can download Firmware to try and unlock from 12 to 16 pipelines?

Not going to happen unless he has a VIVO model; since all x800 pro vivos have ATI Rage Theater or whatever it's called, and so do XT PEs, manufacturers just started out by relabeling failed XTs and disabling four pipes in the bios. This was probably a convenient way to get rid of tons and tons of would-be XTs whose 1.6ns ram can barely touch 500MHz let alone 540. :? Pretty much any vivo x800 available now will have a laser cut across that little bridge to the upper right of the core, just like the normal Pros. Apparently they're still using failed XT GPUs and RAM but for some reason even hardmodding doesn't usually work on them any more.
If he does have a vivo model, just google x800 pro vivo soft mod. He'll need the Gigabyte (regardless of card brand) flash prog, the Gigabyte X800XT PE bios, and the ATI flash prog to backup and restore his original bios after (you can flash back and retain all 16 pipes).
I have a softmodded Sapphire x800 vivo myself, it's not all that though; sure, if you're ridiculously lucky you have more or less an XT PE, but there's a reason it wasn't just sold as one. Mine's only stable with GPU/RAM both at 513MHz; going to need water (and obviously that won't do much for the ram) to get anything like I could with my regular ATI x800. All said it's still about 10% faster than my old one (with both oced) but it's no free XT. Will be neat if yields ever get good enough for even real XTs to be able to oc much.

Well - depends on your benchmark of choice ;).

Me, I'm happier having a less power hungry card (100 WATTS????) and a "out of the box"-quiet variant (Hello HIS IceQ II) rather than the NVIDIA screamers.

Odd, since I used to be an NVIDIA chap meself...
