9600pro

Post by mr pink » Thu Aug 12, 2004 3:58 am

I just ordered a bb ati 9600 pro, used, but havent recieved it yet. This is going to replace my 9000 (passively cooled). The 9600pro has the stock ati fan on it. I'm anxious to see how loud it is.
Any opinions? I havent read much on that one.

It's going in a 3700bqe with a zalman 3100 flower setup. It's pretty quiet now so any change may be really noticable. I know there are ways to change the cooler, but I really cant spend the money.

I do have one of those zalman fan resistors here. Could I put that on the 9600 fan line?

Thanks!

9600pro is low-power enought to be passively cooled. It draws about 19W at full load, max 20W when overclocked. Find a good, approriate heatsink and you're done.

the zalman coolers made for the northbridge would probably work well, it would take up a few pci slots though hehe.

The bba 9600pro fan was the loudest thing in my system in part because it produced the highest pitch in it. I was running 4 L1a's , 1*12v, 3*7v and a maxtor 5400 rpm drive which produced a lower hum/pitch.
Here's a pic of the fan connector:

It's about 6mm wide, so I don't think any fan controller would work...
Definitely go with passive cooling. I took the artic silencer from my 9800p since I didn't want to spend more cash and disconnected the fan. Using ATItool to underclock it at 200core/200mem in non 3d apps, I haven't noticed a problem yet and touching the silencer it is between warm/hot.

That's what I have on my 9600pro. Specifically, the blue one that zalman makes. It does eat up PCI space, but I don't need it anyway. Works like a dream - no artifacting whatsoever, barely warm to the touch after a few hours of halo or raven shield. It even has a very convenient spring-loaded mounting system for installation on GPUs.
