VM-101 on Leadtek PCIe 6600GT: pictures
Since i'm using my second PCIe graphics slot, I was able to get away with having the XP-120 (fanless), VM-101, and NB47J with no touching between them.
Here are some pics (NB: they may take a while to load - small pics, but ? slow website)
1. my XP-120, VM-101, and rear Nexus 120
2. As you can see, I opened up some extra PCI slot covers, and put an old AMD CPU-HS fan on the outside of the case
3. another pic of the old AMD fan
4. pic of the fanmated AMD fan from the outside: it's held in place on top of the DVI connector by Blu-Tac.
Idle temps with the old stock (loud) Leadtek cooler were around 48°, and have not changed with this new setup, with the AMD fan off (which it usually is, thankfully). Load temps are now around 75-80° with the fan off, but if i turn the fan on, it brings the temp down by around 4-5°. Most of the time it's off. I believe there's no problem running a GPU at 80° - am i right? It says on the GPU control panel, core shutdown temp is 127° !! so presumably 80° for max load temp is OK. (i think it once reached 83°).
Unfortunately, my A8N-SLi deluxe's manual says that the second PCIe slot functions only as "1x PCIe slot" when not in SLi mode, which means i may be sacrificing graphics performance - but haven't noticed much of a difference when testing it on Doom 3 for 5 minutes. Is there any way of finding out?

Try benchmarking it, Aquamark or 3dMark05 for example. That should reveal any performance differences quite nicely Just reboot your system before benchmarks, and run them several times jsut in case.
In the DFI nF4 thread someone mentioned running the board in "SLI" and using only the lower slot affected performance by 1%, and that can come froma a anything as you never get exactly the same results running the benchmark several times.

I covered the Graphics card's side vent with acoustipack (which in retrospect might have been a bad idea), but left a hole for the CPU vent, although i haven't put the duct back in yet, as I don't see the need to. But still, I might do some day, to see if it reduces temps.
can 3Dmark05 be run in a window, so i can monitor GPU temps real-time?
And am I right that 80° is an acceptable load temp?

I am unsure if 3DMark2005 can be run in a window, my unregistered 2003 can't. Temps drop very quickly after exiting a GPU intensive application.
80C is at the upper acceptable limit - people with Gigabyte 6600GT passive used to report these numbers. As long as you don't get artifacts, it's supposed to be OK.
Would you mind elaborating on your Sorbothane HDD setup, I'm highly interested about it (where did you get it from, and in which form)?

Download a program called rivatuner. It has a monitor application where it charts the temps of your video ard in a given amount of time. That way, after you run the tests, you can go back to the chart and see what you peak temperature was.Tzupy wrote:I am unsure if 3DMark2005 can be run in a window, my unregistered 2003 can't. I heard that if you put your mobo in SLI mode and use the bottom slot, it'll be PCI-E 8x?as530 wrote:

I am too piss poor to own a new pCI-E setup, so can't verify it myself
Thanks, fixed the link in my sig. No wonder why it was always going to the rig summary page. Anandtech gave me the wrong link .. should be "rigid" instead of just "id"
"To add the system rig to your forum signature select & copy the link below and paste it into your forum signature. "
I wonder why it's never been fixed. I couldn't be the only one in the world who noticed it's not linking properly.
