GPU heatpipe upside down?

They make noise, too.

GPU heatpipe upside down?

Post by dentaku » Tue Jun 21, 2005 6:38 pm

I'm assuming that the heatpipe on my Gigabyte Geforce 6800 wouldn't like being installed in one of those cases that opens upon the right side because the motherboard is installed upside down?

They need to be installed with the GPU down right?

It actually should be fine to install it in any orientation, assuming gigabyte have used good quality heatpipes (which they surely have to some extent).

Good heatpipes actually do not rely on gravity to circulate the fluid inside the pipes. Of course gravity still has an effect but it has been found to be only ~2 degrees typically between the optimum and worst orientation. Heatpipes usually use a wick structure and capillary action to move the fluid from the cool end to the hot end, just think of how a tree manages to move a surprisingly large volume of water from its roots to its leaves possibly greater than 40m above ground if you're having doubts.
