Silentpipe X800XL - 4 months later - meltdown?

Post by rei » Thu Jul 14, 2005 7:58 pm

There's been a few threads asking about Gigabyte Silentpipe (6800/6600/X800XL) temps, and some expressing concern that 100 C load temps have been too high, too risky, I thought nothing of it for first 2-3 months or so. Now I am beginning to think different.

I think the 100-110 degree full load C temps are affecting the core, I'm beginning to get image corruption. 55 degree C idle. 60-65 degrees in Windows use.

I didn't play World of Warcraft too much over the past 4 months, went on hiatus from playing for about 2 months but just picked it up and began playing a lot in last few weeks.

I am seeing graphic corruption now like this:

face textures

right edge

I have good airflow in my case and have a nexus 120mm fan sitting on bottom of case pointed diagonally right at the video card. i can only manage 95C load as the coolest, and 45 idle. Something is definitely wrong with how the heat is being dissipated. :/

CPU temp is 30-35, 40 load, case temps are 35-40. I have 1 back case fan 92mm pull air out. I don't think it's airflow problem.

Most of them can, since most of them follow the ATi reference design to the letter. I know mine can (a Club3D, doesn't get much more vanilla than that :))

You could try the Sapphire X800XL Ultimate VGA instead, here:

http://www.sapphiretech.com/vga/x800-xlult.asp

It comes with the Zalman VF700-ALCU cooler, saving you the bother of attaching it, and is reportedly very quiet. This is the VGA card I'm planning on buying soon and so feedback on it would be helpful.

Some Reviews I've found:

i've been pining for -2- months on where to get the ultimate in canada. no place has it. only place that will ship to canada from usa is zipzoomfly and it will come out to quite a bit by the time it arrives here.

only a handful of places in usa have it as well.

it just lacks VIVO

i am thinking of getting the msi x800xl and using atitool to control fan.

I just picked this one up on Friday, installed last night. Oh so quiet and sweet. I am so very glad I popped the extra $20 for it instead of the generic ati model with the standard cooler. My GPU shows 42c right now with a couple of browser windows open and light activity

Rei, the url that you gave leads to an expired session. Would you copy and paste the text? I'm curious!

Thanks!

I'm running in D3D and getting corruption though. I'm not sure where this Optimal/Default setting is either.

# World of Warcraft: Display corruption is noticed when switching between the game and the Windows desktop, when the desktop is set to 1280x1024 and the graphic preferences is set to Optimal Quality. Further details can be found in topic number 737-19785

World of Warcraft: Switching between game and the Windows Desktop at 1280x1024 results in display corruption.

The information in this article applies to the following configuration(s):

* World of Warcraft
* Radeon X800 Series

Switching between game and the Windows Desktop at 1280x1024 results in display corruption using OpenGL. This issue does not occur when using Direct 3D.

To workaround this issue set quality settings from Optimal to Default in the ATI CATALYST Control Center and game.

ATI Engineering has been advised of this issue and is investigating. Any updates will be published when they become available.
