Zalman VF700 suffcient for 7800GTX?

Post by Mystr_Byrnz » Sat Jul 23, 2005 9:56 am

Budget wise, I could afford the 7800GTX, if I really scrimp until my next paycheck. I'm kinda tempted to take the dive and get the new card instead of the 6800GT. Would the zalman cooler be enough to cool the hotter chip?

On Zalman's website it's not on the compatible OR incompatible lists. Anyone have experience with this?

thanks for the reply.

What voltage was the fan set to get that reading? I wanna be able to run on near silent, and if I have to run the Zalman on high to get decent temps, I'll just stick to the 6800GT

5v is a no go under load, 7-12v would work under load.

Thanks. :) I've convinced myself to splurge and go for the 7800gtx over the 6800.

I think it'll stand the test of time for me like my 9700 pro has since I bought it at its release.

I'd feel like I'm cheating myself if I bought anytihng less :)

I was looking at buying the eVGA flavor of 6800gt. Think their 7800gtx is a good choice? They seem to be basically the nVidia reference design and cooler.

FWIW, Dell Small Business recently had the BFG 7800 for 500 (incl shipping and tax); and I actually got mine on Friday after a 2 week backlog. Nice price (you can check hardforum.com in their hot deals section to see if that will happen again, but I'm not sure it will)

I ordered my card today.

Got it from MOnarchcomputers.com

They had the retail card bundled with BF2 for $507 shipped. Can't beat that!

EDIT: Woah. Glad I bought it earlier today before the price went up. Still a good deal though if you don't already have BF2. :)

What's your (idle temp, load temp, fan voltage) with the 7800 GTX with the VF700?

Was the installation easy? How did u clean up the thermal grease on the GPU?

ArctiClean works really well for cleaning off thermal grease (and it takes 30 seconds).

I got some arcticlean but I have no clue what to use for a "lint free" cloth.

Any suggestions?

I have heard that drip coffee filters are good and lint free for cleaning cpu's. I have not tried them yet.

White Spirit will do the job too from what i've heard.

Really, you don't need to get all the paste off because it's just going back on again

Thanks for your feedback.

I got my 7800 in yesterday and mounted the Zalman. Now I'm just waiting for the PSU which gets here tomorrow and I'll be gtg.

Insane how many screws it took to dismount that stock cooler. and what a crappy cooler it is at that.
