Best Fanless Videocard

Post by EdT » Wed Sep 21, 2005 1:00 pm

I think my 3 year old Crucial ATI 9100 is dying, I'am seeing pixelated green lines start to form on my screen when it gets too hot. The original fan was removed and a heatsink was attached onto it for 9 months now and its starting to act up now, so what is the fastest non fanned card out there ?

i would say Gigabyte 6800, without a doubt. using one for over a year now, never gad an issue. for about a month i downclock the core only in 2D mode to 200 MHz from 325 MHz stock. the idle temperature is low 30s C now, down from mid 40s. and 9.9k/!8.9k in edmark 03/01 is not that sluggish, either :)
heavy gaming temperatures you might ask? well, low 60s after playing DOOM3 or HL2 is OK by my standards, too.

The best fanless video card is my 7800GT with a Zalman ZM80D-HP ;)

Gets similar temperatures as atomidude, but with much higher 3D performance.

I've got the Gigabyte fanless X800XL which is very nice indeed. Runs fairly hot, but I even managed a modest overclock with only a single 120mm case fan (but I have an SLK300B case which has a perforated vent in the side panel in just the right location).

How do you underclock the GPU ? you mean use proggies like ATITool ?

then forget it, I don't want another thing running in the background and slowing down my start-up time, but if i can change it through control panel or something, then it would be fine.

no need for background proggies! try coolbits, works great for nvidia cards. downclock the core as much as you like while stable, then tick "apply settings at restart". easy! :D

You may want to check out eBay as well for OEM/system pulls. I came by this X800 XT that was pulled from a Gateway system. It has a MASSIVE heatsink on it, must be nearly two inches tall and covers 2/3 of one side of the card.

The seller also has a 6800 Ultra that uses passive heatpipe cooling. Another Gateway pull.

One of them looks like a mini-Ninja. I wonder how many PCI slots you lose with that sucker. One? Two?

Lol, I thought the exact same thing. The hole in the middle is especially Ninja-esque.

At least two slots. Looks like it could take up three or even four.
