SLI + 2VGA coolers?

They make noise, too.

SLI + 2VGA coolers?

Post by zikje » Thu Sep 29, 2005 11:56 am

Hi,

Is it possible to use 2 graphic cards in SLI and cool them both with Artic Silencer (38mm height) or Zalman VF700 (30mm height)?

I'll probably go for MSI SLI Platinum mobo. Has anyone got any experience with this?

Thx

There are some cards from Gigabyte (and possible others) that place both GPUs on the one card - the first Gigabyte card was the 3D1, which was two 6600 chips on one card. It was followed by two 6600GTs on one card, then two 6800 (or are they 6800GTs?) on one card. Each of these is an SLI pair, but on one card. Each of the Gigabyte ones has 3D1 in the name.

Each of these is cooled with one cooler, but it's a pretty big cooler. I'm not sure that a cooler designed for one chip would be enough to cool two chips unless you choose fairly low powered chips (like the two 6600s).

Thanks.

My idea is to keep te possility of SLI open for later, so that option won't do. I'm just wondering how much space is needed in between the sockets.

You gave the heights of the different coolers in your original post. Shouldn't those exactly answer your question about how much space is needed between each slot?

I know you'd have no problems whatsoever with one of the Asus SLI boards, such as the A8N Premium, because they have two PCIe slots between the SLI slots. Not sure about MSI though.

Yes, I know I have the heights of the coolers. But I don't have the space between the slots.

I have checked indeed that ASUS would be no problem. But my store recommended not to go for ASUS because of difficulties of warranty with ASUS. So I would like to go for MSI, but I'm still working out if this is possible on those motherboards.
