An 8 pipe 6800 - that should be no problem to cool passively.
geforce 6800xt - good quiet GPU?

I'd say this will be the coolest card you'll find assuming you don't need VIVO function for video editing. They removed chips from the card to lower the thermals.
It still does HDTV support and is fast for gaming and such, it just doesn't have the VIVO support.

I see that you are refering to the 6800xt but I'm assuming it is about the same power draw as the 6800gt. The 6800gt is produced using an older manufacturing process.
6800GT is 350MHz on 13 micron process.
7800GT is 400MHz on 11 micron process.
In short the thinner traces and other advancements of the newer process allow the 7800 to use less power.
pick any random power consumption comparision and you'll see that the 7800 uses less power.

Go one step further and realize that they were testing the OLD 7800GT with the VIVO chip and you realize that the NEW 7800GT without VIVO will be even cooler.
The only thing keeping them from going fanless is time. It will happen. If you want to you can take the zalman hs/fan off and go fanless now.

And is is .13 or .11 process? And do you know the TDP? Power consumption measured in real use?EasyRaider wrote:No, no, XT is half the pipes and with lower clock, possibly lower voltage too. Power draw should be lower than both 6600 GT and 6800 "vanilla".dhanson865 wrote:I see that you are refering to the 6800xt but I'm assuming it is about the same power draw as the 6800gt.
According to what I've read the 6800XT is just a PCIe version of the 6800LE (which is .13 nm)
I'm saying the 7800GT non VIVO will be lower power / cooler than the 6600GT and 6800 vanilla.
I guess we won't know until some reviewer gets these in hand and does a power draw test.
The new variants are (in order of processing power):
7800GT non VIVO
7800GS
6800GS
6800XT
But I don't think either of the new 6800 flavors will seem interesting (by the time of a formal review) with the 7800 lower power version coming out in a week or two and the 7800GS, 7600 family, and 7200 family coming out in a couple of months...
