Trying to install an AGP card for a friend.

The pc is an intel 3.0, not sure on mobo, has a built in intel 64 meg vid card.
After shutting down all the way.
If i install the agp card no video comes up either card,
If I try to set the vga display to std vga don't seem to find it in XP setup
I tried going into bios setup and the agp is already set as active.

Should I try and install the card while the pc is on?

Definitely don't install the card when the PC is on, that is a BIG no-no. I don't know what to suggest, really.

Totally agree with vertigo on No-No for installation when PC is on.

Just throwing a stupid/obvious question here - have you disabled the onboard VGA when installing the AGP card? Another thing to check is IRQ conflict.

I did not seem to find the onbaord vid setup when checking video defaults in the BIOS, it was defaulting to AGP 64 meg aperature. Perhaps I should check it under the MOBO settings?

You get help for making me laugh.

It sounds like you've got it working fine with onboard video. And you can see something when the AGP video card is installed (like the BIOS screens), but Windows isn't quite working right. Try downloading and installing the latest video drivers for your video card. And make sure the card is installed properly, evenly, and is completely in the slot.

I'd like to blame XP since I am strictly a Win 98SE sort of guy, but that is lame. I hope I can figure it our cos eventually may be able to be a similar pc - a 3.0 for a super cheap price and migrate my 9800 fanless card to it. Thanks Chang.

If I remember correctly (it's long time ago that I use MB with on board graphic), you have to disable onboard VGA through Device Manager -> Property of Display Device then choose disable it in one of the pull-down menu.

Might worth a try.

try disabling onboard video through the Device Manager, uninstalling Intel video drivers, go in the bios and see if you can switch video mode from "onboard" or "pci" to "agp", and check the motherboard itself to see if there are any jumper settings you need to change.

Could be a jumper switch on the motherboard too. Look for any identifying numbers or a FCC ID. You could also pause the boot screen and write down the alpha-numeric string at the bottom, then do a search. If it's a branded computer there should be model tags somewhere too.

It'll be much easier if you identify the motherboard.
