Connecting VF700s fan to X800GTO2 fan connector??

Post by OVI » Sun Jan 15, 2006 2:58 am

Can I connect the wires from the VF700s fan to the X800GTO2 fan connector (small 3-pin)? I was thinking of cutting the wires from the stock cooler and soldering the connector to the VF700 fan.The reason for this is that I would like to adjust the fan speed with Atitool (more options than 5V/12V and automatic settings for games etc).

The stock fan is rated 0.35A and the Zalman 0.14A, is this a problem?

From the horses mouth; W1zzard, the creator of ATI Tool:

works fine

okay, do you know if all heatsinks Zalman has released draws so little current?

i.e. this can be done with all Zalman fans?

yep

OK thanks for your speedy reply.
I still would like to know if someone has done this and can confirm it really works.

Well I was going to do it the dirty way; remove the plastic thing from the Male fan connector on the card so the Zalman fan connector could be forced on... But I noticed that the polarity was wrong, the Zalman has like is normal, positive in the middle but the card is wired for negative in the middle...

So I would have to become all serious and solder something together ;-)

But I can assure you that as long as the fan you connect does not draw more current than what the card is built for you will not have any problems...

It works!

I made a small cable with approriate connectors on each end and didnt even have to cut the original wires from the VF700 or the stock cooler.
It looks like this:

I made the small 3-pin connector for the gfx card by cutting a connector from an old cd audio cable like this:

Its basicly the same connector in 4-pin form. So by cutting away one pinhole I got a connector that fits nicely to the socket on my X800GTO2.

I also swapped the fan on the VF700 with a 80mm Panaflo L1A and I'm very pleased with It.

Good work!

Any pics from the fan mod? Sounds interesting... How much quieter did it become?

Sorry I didnt take any pics of the fan mod but i did it like others have done it, theres couple of good threads about it here somewhere (going to sleep too tired to search for them for you).

The sound even on full RPM is very quiet, of course the CFM is also lower so the cooling is also affected. But I can always put the stock Zalman fan back on (because I didnt cut any wires from the fans :D) if i need more cooling on GFX.

OVI,
Am I right in thinking that you now have the Panaflo L1A connected directly to the X800GTO2? Isn't the panaflo rated for .82A well over the stock fan's .35A? I'm thinking of replacing my vf700's fan with L1A and being able to control the fan with ATI Tool would be a huge plus. However I'm a bit wary of plugging it into the card with the power discrepancy. Thanks for any help
Scott
