7900GT fan always at 100% sound bomb setting

Post by Live » Mon Apr 10, 2006 5:11 am

I have a PNY 7900GT and the fan is always at 100% according to pcwizard and my bleeding ears. The 7900GT was installed on a fresh copy of XP and the 84.25 were the first and only GPU drivers installed. All clocks stock and temp idling around 50. At which temps are the fan meant to run different speeds?

According to this thread on Anandtech you should be able to see in your videocard bios what the fan settings are and change them. Anyone know anything about how to see what is listed in the bios and what and how to change it if needed?

I have read reviews and also on this site that the 7900GT is supposed to be rather silent and no one mentions any fan problems:evil:. For me at least it is not. In my rig I have 3 other fans 2 Nexus 120@12V (full blast on Fanmate 2 which I guess is a bit les then 12V) and the one in my Seasonic S12-500. I can’t really hear any of those fans since the 7900GT is overpowering all of them. I can hear my hard drives at seek but nothing at idle.

Mine was at 100% all the time and it's REALLY loud. I just put a V1 Ultra w/ a 80mm Nexus on it and now it's fantastic. W/ the Nexus at 12V, the temps are down 10C. I can run the Nexus at about 25% and still get good cooling for non-game activities. Of course the V1+fan is another $50...

I have the exact same problem, but with my XFX 7800GTX 256 XXX. My NV Silencer 5 Rev. 3 spins at 100% all the time. Even when idle. It's one of the noisiest (maybe the noisiest) component(s) in my PC. I hate, hate, hate it!! Getting replaced ASAP (see my other thread).

Accelero X2 vs V1 Ultra vs VF900-Cu for silencing X1900XTX?

I settled on the Accelero X2 and (over the rest of my hardware) it's inaudible in 2D mode / idle. As for an nVidia card I would pick either VF-900 or V1 Ultra because there you can adjust fan speed manually. While the X1 is probably very silent as well, I don't think nVidian cards have as good an on-board dynamic fan controller as ATI cards. I say, get a VF-900 or V1 Ultra and adjust the fan speed (and noise) yourself!

Good luck!

Actually our honored member jmke wrote about this issue with nVidia cards in his VGA cooler round-up over at Madshrimps. Scroll down to the "The FAN control issue" heading.

Madshrimps: VGA Cooler Roundup April 2006

Good luck! And thanks again to jmke for this info. :D

I had no such issue, but when that thing spun up, it sounded like something was about to explode. VF900 solved all that, and it can run at absolute minimum speed at all times and maintain temps in the 40s under full load. :-)

My eVGA 7900GT (stock) seemed to go 100% all the time. But it isn't a problem anymore since it's passsive (ZM80D-HP) now and 6 degrees cooler ;-)
