XFX 7900gs AGP cooling

Post by tanglefoot » Fri Jun 08, 2007 4:34 am

Hi guys. Anybody have a suggestion for quietly cooling a 7900gs AGP card. Unless I'm missing something, it seems Artic Cooling skipped this line. :(

Thx,
tanglefoot

Hey I also have this card. I bought a VNF100 Zalman for it but I haven't received it yet.

I'm also in the market for a cooler for this, although I also have a Zalman VF700 that I can test with it.

Wow, neither the VNF100 nor the VF&00 fit! What a waste. This card has an extra chip on it... back to the stock heatsink it is. Anyone know of a compatible heatsink?

Edit, VF700, not 900.

You're really going to have a hard time finding an aftermarket cooler for the AGP 7xxx series. The ones from Zalman (at least my ZM80D-HP, and only at an angle on my 7600gs) will just barely reach the distance of the mounting holes, but might not take care of the HSI bridge chip. The coolers from most other manufacturers won't even fit mounting holes as far apart as the ones on the AGP 7-series.

Check out what I did viewtopic.php?t=43422

A new ZM80D-HP mounted that way would cool fine, but mine is old and the screws are stripping and poor contact is being made everywhere between the heatpipes and heatsinks, so take my temperatures with a grain of salt.

Actually the word is that the Accelero S2 will fit but I can't find a single confirmation of this. They are all claiming that it would fit before the it was actually released.

Also, if the Accelero S2 fits how do you cool the HSI?

Here is a company that claims it fits the 7800 GS, which is basically the same as the 7900 GS: http://www.yoyotech.co.uk/product_info. ... 61693fcf60

Here is a picture of one with a jiggered VF700:

I know my 7600gs AGP had an HSI heatsink, see the pictures in my link. I dunno if/where you can find those though -- it just uses a pushpin mount system through the holes around the HSI. Simple, but no idea where you'd get one... maybe if you asked nice XFX would send one of theirs.

I actually ordered a Thermalright V1 Ultra because the mounting system looks very flexible:

To cover the RAM, Zalman has the low-profile RAM sinks that come with the VNF100 and can be purchased separately.

Finally, the 7900 GS has odd mounting brackets so the traditional ZALMAN HSI heatsink won't fit, so I just purchased a separate chipset sink with adhesive backing.

Let's see how this turns out.
