is it possible to mount zalman hp-80d on new pci-e cards?

how much W can it cool with no additional fans? is it suitable for some 8600GT/GTS ?

it doesn't fit on the reference designed 8600 series.

It fits 6600, 7600, as well as 8500.

I wouldn't run it on anything newer than a Radeon 9800Pro without active cooling. Even then I would go much past an X800GTO. But I have seen some people run 7000-series Geforce with active cooling.

I'm not going to recommend it though.

newer card doesn't nececery mean higher heat dissipation.

AFAIK, 7600GS/GT cards generate less heat then Radeon 9800Pro

I used the Zalman on a 7600GT in a toaster HTPC case. Barely any airflow and it ran fine for over a year. Sold it and got a fanless Asus 8600GT.

Worked with my x1900xt and Nexus 120mm fan, unfortunaly temps were too high so I had to switch to VF900CU...which was too loud so the fan had the be replaced.

I've used my zalman hp-80d to passively cool gf titanium 4200 8x.
long time ago I've found that it generates ~50W at full load.

now, I've found that gf 7900gs and 7900gt generate ~48W at full load.

http://www.codinghorror.com/blog/archives/000662.html
and here we can see that 7900gs consumes 13W more than 7600gt at full load:

does this mean I could use my hp-80d to passively cool 7900gs?

have anyone tried something similar?

I've got one on a X850XT....it can barely handle it, even with a front intake feeding directly AND the addon fan. I have to believe that my mounting is screwed up somewhere...but, I've checked it and everything seems right.

Works fine on my 9700 Pro though...plus that one doesn't have a temperature sensor to make me worry :D

Well, to some degree, it'll depend on how you define "passive"... On my 9800Pro (a little less than 50 watt) in a P180 and with a Nexus front and another rear... everything works fine when the Nexus' are at 12 volt. At 5 volt, it freezes in 3D gaming, usually within 20 minutes. Room temp in the early twenties...

A thing I definately dont like about the Zalman hp-80d, is that it's very limiting for airflow for VGA-RAM.

Personally, I'll probably ditch it soon, in favor for a Arctic Cooling S2.
