VGA Silencer passive on 9600 PRO
Well I just purchased a first generation vga silencer second-hand, only to find out that the stupid fan has the infamous rattle that has plagued the silencer series of coolers. Looking at the actual heatsink, I noticed that it's quite big in size. Since the 9600 PRO doesn't produce all that much heat, I'm wondering If I would be able to use the vga silencer passively. Any thoughts? The card doesn't have a temp sensor, so I won't have a way to monitor temps.

Hi, I used to have the same setup with VGA silencer on 9600pro. I had the Silencer wired up to the 12v/5V toggle on my Zalman MFC1.
I tended to run it with 5V feed to the silencer (set on low of course) at which the fan turned but very slowly, it will not start at this setting. For gaming I would just flick the switch and have 12V feed for "normal" low speed which is ample for 9600 series cards. I did also have times when it was just turned off, card survived fine. You could experiment with 7V/5V feed to your card and flick the high/low switch on the back.
Or make some kind of off/on switch, have it off when idle and on for 3D work, generally game sound effects will drown out any noise made.

The Zalman ZM50 is an older discontinued solution that works great on the 9600 and 9700 series of Radeon cards, provided you have some airflow in your case.
I don't have piles of airflow and my case interior is pretty warm due to a power mad Intel Prescott , but this seems to work wonderfully for me.
Get one here (same seller I got mine from)
