Looks awesome, a worthy passive card to be sure_MarcoM_ wrote:OMG. OMG.~El~Jefe~ wrote: http://www.theinquirer.net/gb/inquirer/ ... es-passive
look at that crap.
Passive. full clock. full feature. 2-5 frames from GTX.
When dreams come true... a passive powerfull card. I hope is ok to mount this beast in my Antec P150
Well, looking at the compatibility list from Thermaltake on the non-plus HR-03, 8600GTS is right there.... This would be so lovelyTsorovan wrote:The Chinese site that was first in reviewing this card last week said something about HR03 (non Plus) fitting. I am gladd you said, "relatively speaking". Yes, that is a good point. 280 dollars isnt cheap for anything that is a hobby. I hope the sparkle can hit the 225 dollar mark. That would actually negate a lot of equipment that costs money to cool it. I always love a passive solution and then I slap on a 90 or 120mm nexus on ultra low to cool it. No difference in audible volume, yet it runs cool 24/7JazzJackRabbit wrote:Well, seems like 8800GT beats GTS fair and square in every resolution except 25x16 and 19x12 with 4xAA/16xAF where memory size/memory bandwidth become an issue. Given that evga is supposed to come out with superclocked version at 700/2000/1750 (compared to stock 600/1800/1500) at $289 MSRP this is going to be a winner.
Finally, affordable (relatively speaking) performance to the masses, although Crysis performance is still lacking but that's hardly surprising. The only problem left to solve is puny noisy cooler. Anyone knows of any compatible after market coolers? Zalman VF900 or Accelero S1 maybe?

FRYs has stock clocked (600/1800/1500) evga for $229 on pre-order if you're interested.

It would be awesome if the mounting hole position is same as 8600GTS. because accelero S2 fits 8600GTS perfectly.Tsorovan wrote:The Chinese site that was first in reviewing this card last week said something about HR03 (non Plus) fitting. The VR-Zone.com review has side by side pics where they show the holes on the card appear to be the same as the older Nvidia Geforce 7 cards.

It should just be a case of fitting a standard Thermalright HR-03 cooler onto the card.

Until someone actually gets a card in their hands, who knows, but to me, based on the "naked" pictures of the 8800GT in the VR-Zone review, you might be able to replace the whole stock cooler with a massive chunk of heat sink. It looks like the stock cooler has a continuous flat base. If the ram chips and the GPU are all at the same height, and no other components interfere, this should be possible. Massive heat sinks are cheaply available at most scrap metal yards. Again, until someone actually pulls one apart - or we get pics of the BACK of the stock cooler - this is hypothetical.
I am buying one of these cards as soon as etailers price at or under MSRP. Finally a reasonably priced replacement for my 6800GS!

Nevermind, i read the spec sheet and the dimensions match that of the 8800GTS, which we all know fits the Solo without issue.

Answer: Yes
I think i'm going to use eVGA's "step up" program and trade my 8800GTS in on the 8800GT. Is it worth it? Depends on:
1. If the benchmarks aren't lying
2. Power consumption charts aren't lying
3. After market cooling choices

Well the 8800GTS and the 8800GT are somewhat the same architecture (G92 is a die-shrink with maybe some locked features), so even if they come out with new drivers that help the GTS, chances are those drivers will help the GT as well.quadraphonic wrote:I know it beats the 8800GTS 320 in benchmarks, but I picked one up on a good deal a few months back (haven't bought the system for it yet). Do you guys think that they could still release some drivers that would push the GTS further - or am I sitting on a brand new, underperforming card?
Simply put, the GT has more processors running faster with more memory to allocate. Hard to beat that ::shrugs::

I've got two weeks left on my trade-in with eVGA, I'll see if anything comes out in the next few days, but I'll likely trade in the GTS.tehfire wrote:Well the 8800GTS and the 8800GT are somewhat the same architecture (G92 is a die-shrink with maybe some locked features), so even if they come out with new drivers that help the GTS, chances are those drivers will help the GT as well.quadraphonic wrote:I know it beats the 8800GTS 320 in benchmarks, but I picked one up on a good deal a few months back (haven't bought the system for it yet). I wonder if a Thermalright V1 would be able to cool this thing?
I have a 1st-gen V1 cooling an overclocked 7800GT CO right now with an undervolted 80mm Nexus on it.
It hits about 68-70 Celsius after several hours at load, and idles between 38 and 45 at idle depending on the room temperature.
Judging from the pictures I'm pretty sure it would fit, but I'm not sure it would provide enough cooling to handle the hotter card.
Edit: hmmm, this post at PCPerspective might indicate the answer is no. Although Thermalright also said the V1-Ultra was needed for a 7800 GT and my regular V1 works fine, so...

Yeah that passively cooled 8800GT sure is sexy.~El~Jefe~ wrote:tom is a F***ing moron.Garfield3d wrote:According to... http://www.tomshardware.com/2007/10/29/ ... oise_level the 8800 GT is pretty much on par with the 8800 GTS. that being said, the 8800GT beats the GTS in any memory configuration in 9 out of 10 tests currently shown around the web. I have not been on Tom's sight in a while. It has royally screwed my up purchase choices before with it's inane drivel.

previous gts owners = pwnd
A year is a long time though and that should have been understood.
Same thing happened to the x1900xt vs x1950 series cards. cheaper by far, works better, year later.
That being said, I've yet to see a x1950 beating a x1900xt... what models are you talking about exactly ?
EDIT : I suppose it's the 1950XTX you're talking about, I stand corrected ^^

Dailytech just ran a news item and apparently nvidia IS going to release g92 based GTS with 512/1024MB memory on board. Until now it's all been rumors but it finally seems to be confirmed, new GTS should be coming at the end of November, early December, not much is known except that they will feature 128SPs.
Hopefully unlike GT new GTS will feature normal dual slot cooler.
Also, I think that current 8800GT and refreshed 8800GTS releases are very much alike 7900GS and 7950GT that were released last time, so I think shortly after new year we will see new generation from nVidia.

There's a new version of the HR-03, called the HR-03 GT, specifically for the new 8800 GT.
While the HR-03 rev. A is compatible with the 8800 GT, Thermalright recommends their new product:

Hrm okay, thought it was quiet :/AuraAllan wrote:With a VF-900 it wont be really quiet imo. I find the VF-900 too noisy. Damn noisy Zalman fans.kfuglsang wrote:Hope I'll be able to make it quiet
Any idea of what alternative I have with the Antec Fusion 430-case?
- the cooler won't fit if its taller than the retaining bracket of the card I've read. How large a gap there is between the case and the card I don't know, unfortunately :/

I got an EVGA 8800GT SC and have the same experience. For about 3 seconds after booting the fan is at maximum and then goes quiet. Very happy with price/performance so far.sputnik99 wrote:Just picked up an Asus 8800GT and found the stock fan to be really quiet... I can barely hear the card when I'm not gaming. The card is in a micro-atx setup and it replaced a passive video card.
