Radeon hd3850 (105w)
from techpowerup:
"ATI Radeon HD 3870, will feature 825MHz core and 2400MHz memory clocks, DirectX 10.1 support, and PCI-e 2.0 technology. ATI Radeon HD 3850 will be clocked at 700MHz/1800MHz core/memory with DirectX 10.1 support and PCI-e 2.0. Both cards will feature 55nm manufactured graphics processing unit (GPU)."

The hd3850 is supposed to be 105w which is less than half the power of the hd2900xt. I think its going head to head with the 8800gt.

I am really interested in this card. I'd like to buy one, if I can get my hands on an Asus A8R32 motherboard (so I can upgrade to PCIe).
It seems stupid, but I really want to keep my Opteron for a while :¬)
I wonder what sort of cooling will be necessary for these new AMD/ATI cards? Hopefully more silent solutions are available for us SPCR-types than for the current crop of high-end cards.

In my last link,... it says that the hd 3800 series will be no more as 85w, but we will have to wait and see.
copyd from last link:
"According to manufacturers said, ATI RadeonHD 3800 Series the highest demand for electricity only 85 W, were far below the GeForce 8800 GT 110 W, help reduce overall system power consumption."

About the HD3850, I'm kinda worried about the cooler. Since it makes less heat, something tells me they're gonna put a cheaper cooler on it. Happens all the time. If anybody knows how loud the new 8800GT cooler is I'm curious.
Man, it's so sad that we're so happy about a card that makes *only* 108W of heat. Nice improvement, but that's still about twice as much as my CPU!!!

Hothardware.com says it "is probably the noisiest product to come out of NVIDIA in a long time" and frankly I'm inclined to believe them after seeing tech arp review.lloydo wrote:The TechReport article noted the 8800GT cooler as "whisper-quiet" ... who knows what that means.
Tech arp took apart the heatsink and apparently the fan used is Everflow B127515BU blower fan. Google search for model number revealed top speed of 5500 RPM. Take that SPCR. Ironically tech arp have nothing but high praises for the fan saying that "it's rated for a noise level of just 51 dBA. True enough, the cooler was really quiet even at full load". As if anybody here is going to believe that...
From my first post: "The hd3850 is supposed to be 105w which is less than half the power of the hd2900xt. I think its going head to head with the 8800gt."
Sorry.... think i got that bit wrong lol. I think its the faster version ati card (hd3870) thats going head to head with the 8800gt 512mb thats out just now. The 256mb version of the 8800gt should be out this month, which will be up against the hd3850.

Damn you beat me too it.

Not gospel, but likely, the Inq are right more than they are wrong, and this is the kind of tech that the future is made of, first AMD CPU's then AMD GPU's, it makes sense, and means an even nicer life for those of us who want a silent desktop and some powerful graphics on demand possibly with a fan kicking in to keep it cool.

"As far as we know, RV670 chips will change their clock and power consumption according to 3D load. So, if you're running a highly demanding scene in a game, the GPU will be clocked at maximum, speed, while running cut-scenes or any lower-GPU intensive scene will cut down the clock of the card and decrease the power consumption.
This is something that Nvidia cannot offer with its GeForce 8800GT, at least according to Daamit's marketing slides."
I buy NVidia from 1997, but if this dynamic clock will be effective for power consumption, i'll give a try to ATI eheheh.
Time to buy a Caviar GP, too

I like two things from that article: Price, and silence, but mostly price. If it is underclocked, I would suspect heat is not an issue. But this depends on the cooler it comes with.andyb wrote:Sweet pricing (fingers crossed).

The benchmarks from the 8800gt are very good, but those apply mostly for high-end games. The ATi line looks best suitable for mid-ranged games and HTPCs.
"ATI was able to cut down the number of transistors by a nice figure. Combine this with 80nm vs. 55nm process, and you can imagine just how much more ATI can lower the prices and offer greater value for the Yuletide shopping frenzy."
Lower price, and lower heat, i hope. Uhm now i'm excited, time to a decent gfx card with low power and low heat in mind? Fingers crossed for me, too

Someone here had experience with these Zalman coolers?Matija wrote:8800 GT and 3850 pictures:
