Which silent cooler?

They make noise, too.

Which silent cooler?

Post by blackbox » Wed Nov 28, 2007 3:34 pm

I have an XFX 7900GS whose cooler is too loud, I have an Antec P180 and when I unplug the graphics fan it's almost silent, with the case open!

So I need to shut it up.

I've thought about removing the metal cover, pulling off the fan and attaching a large slower fan to the current heatsink - not sure that this is a good idea though.

I've thought about the passive coolers, like the HR-03 which seem pretty cool, a passive cooler would be great, but all the reviews seem to recommend a fan on them anyway. - The zalman VNF100 even states "Fanless VNF100 does not emit any noise and can be used semi-permanently." What the hell is semi-permanently supposed to mean?

Are there any truely quiet coolers with fans out there, Zalman VF900-Cu?

Any thoughts?

I suggest the Arctic Cooling Accelero S1. It's an impressive cooler according to the reviews I've seen (X-bit Labs IRC found it was much better than the VNF100). It can be run passively and from what I hear, with a low-speed 120mm fan strapped to it, it cools even a 8800GT very well.

Another vote for the Accelero S1/S2. With a big case like the P180, it should be fine. If not, just put a quiet fan blowing on/near/through it and it'll be perfect.

+ 1 Accelero. That is also cheaper than zalman.

That does look pretty cool, and its really cheap too!

I think i might go for it, thanks all.

Will probably try passive first, but I have a spare 120mm fan lying about anyway.

S1 all the way. I just straped on to my X1950Pro and it works so nicely. No fan = same C as stock cooler at 80%. Add a 120mm fan working at 600RPM gets it even lower (roughly around 40C on load).

If you really really really want the fan there's always the X1 by Arctic cooling which cools the card greatly but the S1 is still the better choice.

Well it's all installed - this thing is incredible, 25-30°C less than max temp of stock cooling, and that's with no fan! Installed in a P180.

My pc is now so silent I can hear an annoying buzz from the monitor.

Here's a temp graph, Idle & playing HL:2 & NFS Pro Street
