8800GTS (new g92) v. 8800GT v. ATI 3870 sound levels

They make noise, too.

8800GTS (new g92) v. 8800GT v. ATI 3870 sound levels

FYI, also included is old 8800gts 320, and 2900xt.

The next page also has power measurements:

Maybe not the best tests ever, but good enough to get a good idea of how they perform relative to each other.

The 8800gt and 2900xt are terrible, the rest are pretty good for stock coolers and comparable to each other.

I can say HD2900 is loud. My HD2900pro has 4 levels of fan speed:

1st level is very quiet. Unfortunatly its nearly never in 1st level. When it boots up and GPU is not warm (around 25% fan speed )

2st level sounds like hair dryer on low. Clearly audiable most are woosh. You get this one in desktop and surfing. ( around 31% fan speed )

3rd level: Sounds like tornado passing by. Usually when you game you get this one ( 50% fan speed)

4th level: Honey, are they blue angels rehearsing inside our house? That honestly sounds like jet fighter or squadron of them... When you're playing in oblivion high res, AA's and all filtering and HDRI's on this is what you get... ( 75% fan speed)

So... noise levels of HD3870 and new 8800GTS rev 2 make me intrest.

8800gt might get better once someone puts a full slot cooler on it.

As for loudness: the 8800GT is pretty silent as long as the fan is at <30% capacity, which is 1600ish rpm i think. But when that fanspeed starts ramping up, it gets ugly.
With the fan locked at 30% my card gets about 85C, which is pretty hot and on top of that, it dumps nearly all that heat straight into the case.

Nvidia kinda dropped the ball on the reference design in my opinion, sure it looks great, but as soon as you put it to the test you know at what price those looks are.

Could the HD3850 be cooled with a Arctic Cooling S1? I heard their temps are already super low with the stock cooler so an S1 would do about the same right?

The real question is if the mounting holes are located in the same area.

a tech on the evga forum said the fan is not suppose to spin past 30% unless the temp reaches into the 90's. that is kinda hot. people believe it is set that way to keep the card quiet -- as you said it is ok @ until it ramps up.

I suspect they wanted to hit a certain price point because of the new ATI cards coming out. So they needed to save a little money - and the stock cooler took the hit.

on a few sites it looks like 8800gts runs 40 watts hotter than 3870. 80 something versus 120 something. (load)

thats crappy.

might as well get a gtx for that

While it sounds scary, 90C is not an unusual temperature for a GPU these days.

In case of the 8800GT this is a bad thing though, since it has no exhaust. Meaning your case temps will rise a lot if you load the card for a while.

anything hitting 60c means to me that the enthusiast is approaching things incorrectly.
