HD 2400/2600 Pro/XT owners, what are your idle clock speeds

They make noise, too.

HD 2400/2600 Pro/XT owners, what are your idle clock speeds

Post by smilingcrow » Sun Dec 09, 2007 11:09 am

I bought a PowerColor HD 2600 Pro SCS3 256MB this week and was disappointed by the idle power consumption which I put down to the fact that the GPU and RAM clocks aren’t lowered at idle unlike the Asus HD 2400 Pro which I tested; see here.

Would you please post the idle/load GPU & RAM speeds for your HD 2400/2600 cards along with the make and model number. I’m hoping to use this data as a way of determining which cards have lower idle power consumption.
To start things off here’s data on the two cards that I’ve used; I’ve added at the end that the cards are passively cooled as this is of relevance.

Make & Model, GPU/RAM @idle, RAM type, GPU/RAM @load, passive or fan

PowerColor HD 2600 Pro SCS3 256MB: 600/400(DDR2), 600/400 - Passive
Asus HD 2400 Pro: 110/252(DDR2), 525/400 - Passive

There's a thread about ATI 2600 cards not changing 2D/3D clock speeds here:

You might be able to fix it by flashing a different BIOS onto the card perhaps?

Gigabyte GV-RX26T256H (HD 2600XT): 110/252 (DDR3), 800/700 - Passive

Default settings (no overclock).

Does anyone have experience of doing this? If you get it wrong I suppose you trash the card.

I read some poor reviews for the Gigabyte 2600 Pro with regard to flickering so I’m wondering how you are getting on with the 2600 XT. Also, what sort of temps are you getting?
It’s idling at the same speed as a 2400 Pro so I wonder how much power it will consume.

Idle temps are around 40C, and seem to stabilise at around 77-78C max after running ATI Tool artefact testing for half an hour or so (this is in a P182 with a single Nexus exhaust running mostly at 600rpm). There's definitely no flickering, at least not that I've noticed.

I'm quite happy with the card, although it's mostly overkill for my needs - it will probably be used for HTPC purposes in due course, and I wanted the extra horsepower just in case I need it to handle HD acceleration *and* inverse telecine *and* noise reduction (I gather the lesser 2400/2600s might struggle a bit if they're asked to do it all simultaneously).

Sounds good, thanks for sharing.

I believe I'll be purchasing the same card shortly. :)

That’s a similar setup to my own and the temps are good.

Sounds like a good card I just wish I knew know what the idle power consumption is. With so many of these HD 2400/2600 cards not supporting under-clocking at idle it’s hard to know how much they consume.
There is a review of your card at Xbitlabs which shows the performance but perversely it doesn’t seem to give temperature data which is strange for a passive card.
