PCI-E 2.0 and crossfire-x?

They make noise, too.

PCI-E 2.0 and crossfire-x?

Post by djkest » Thu Jan 03, 2008 6:40 am

Okay, I'm a little confused... maybe I should do more research...

I'm thinking about getting the MSI Neo2 P35, and it supports crossfire and PCI-E 1.0.

I have an HD3870, which is said to take advantage of crossfire-x and PCI-E 2.0. Currently I think only AMD 790X and 790FX chipsets support these standards.

Do I need crossfire-x if I want to eventually run with a crossfire setup? Will my speeds be reduced because of a loss of bandwidth lacking PCI-E 2.0? Also I think I heard crossfire needs 2 identical cards, whereas crossfire X can take any 2 cards? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

the 3870 can run in the 1.0 slots. I am running it in that now. I believe when in a 2.0 slot then it does not need the extra power connector but i am not positive on that one. As for the added bandwidth it does not utilize the full amount on a 1.0 slot.
