Gigabyte 8800GT GV-NX88T512HP
I've got Gigabyte 8800GT GV-NX88T512HP:

It has 2pin fan rotating at 100% all the time regardless of the GPU temperature. And it is rather noisy. I would like to silence it a bit.
My plan to hush this card is:
1. undervolt the card fan using Zalman Fanmate
2. Install PCI slot fan blowing on to the hetpiped cooler. Something like this:

Has anyone tried something similar? All suggestions are welcome - like a better pci slot cooler for example (I don't like LED bling-bling much )

If you have modding hands you could make a duct of some sort and thus exhausting the air from the card. I made one for my 8800GT untill i had my Accelero S1 and it worked great.
You could also open up the PCI slots and suspend a fan blowing outwards, that should work just as good, or put a fan at the opposite side (front low) and have that blowing across the VGA.

How can you undervolt by Zalman FanMate? It has 3-pin connectors...
Thanks!

I've got to give Tech Report a credit for taking note of the fan control issue in its recent graphics card roundup.

Don't bother
First thing I did was pull the stock cooler and fit an Accelero S1 and an undervolted 120mm fan. Total cost around £20 from OC UK.
I now have near silent operation as in I have to pull the case apart and put my ear close to hear it at all. Idles at 33c with 43c load after 15mins ATI artifact checker and 21c room ambient.
If you need help fitting or sourcing let me know.

Re the short Gigabyte GV-NX88T512HP and its runaway Zalman fan, what about getting a Zalman Fan Mate 2 and a 2pin-3pin adapter? If you can't find the adapter, there's always the Scythe SY124010L that you can buy for $4 and chuck for the enclosed adapter.
It's down and dirty, but it's $10 plus shipping and you can dial in a quiet fan speed when you aren't gaming.
And for the sake of full disclosure, et cetera, I ain't done it. I'm merely thinking out loud as the Gigabyte just might fit in my case.

I ended up removing the stock fan and hanging a 92mm Panaflo from the stock heatsink's fins using small plastic zip ties. This has the added bonus that the HD that sits on sorbothane strips on the bottom of the case gets better airflow from the 92mm fan suspended a couple of inches above it.
Now if I could just lose the coil whine under load.

Buy one of these and take out 3 blanking plates below the card - smile
