They make noise, too.

Accelero S1 and S1 rev2 difference?

Post by mcv » Sat Feb 16, 2008 5:46 am

Does anyone know what the difference is between the original Accelero S1 and the S1 rev 2?

On a site where I was assembling my new PC, I just noticed the rev 2, and the description said it had a much more flexible mounting system, that now supported the Radeon 3850 and 3870 cards. But I thought the original already did that (and according to http://www.arctic-cooling.com/vga2.php?idx=147, it does).

So what's the difference between the mounting systems? Does it offer any advantage over possibly supporting a few more cards? If the original fits my Peak 3850, is there any reason for me to get the rev 2 instead?

Speaking of my Peak 3850 (that I still need to order, by the way), according to http://www.arctic-cooling.com/vga2.php? ... ta=7&disc=, you should leave the original ram heatsinks on the 3870 (which would solve the problem of badly glued ram heatsinks that the S1 often seems to have). But is this also true for the 3850? It doesn't say, but I assume it is. And does every version of the 3870 and the 3850 have exactly the same ram heatsinks? They often have very different GPU coolers, so why not different ram heatsinks?
And especially with my dirt cheap Peak 3850, which apparently has lots of problems with its cooler (which I'm going to replace with the S1, so I don't care), I'm kinda wondering if perhaps they replaced the stock ram heatsinks with cheap crap as well.

Any ideas?

Attachment method is same with the old rev. Just the arms design is changed lightly so it can be used in newer cards.

But which newer cards? Doesn't the original version already support the newest cards (Radeon 38x0, 8800GT)? But the new one does support the Radeon 2600 and 2400, and nVidia's 8600 and 8500. But all that is not very relevant for me. I guess I'll stick with the old one, since I can get that one more easily.

Every place I look, it says out of stock or backordered.

Edit - please disregard - I found a place that claims to have them in stock.

I'm ordering it from the same place where I'm ordering the rest of my new PC, and it's the only part that can take up to 10 days. (Still a lot better than the E8400 CPU, which would take more than 20 days.)
