I found on another forum someone put together a good list of graphics card power consumption use at idle and load.

Long list of graphics cards power consumption.

I posted a compilation of cards power consumptions here:

Now I'm already working with mark84 from atomicmpc forums, we have joined forces and we are preparing a new compilation with lots of data and good visual graph.
We are still working on it. I hope it will be ready soon

Good to hear. Now I'm already working with mark84 from atomicmpc forums, we have joined forces and we are preparing a new compilation with lots of data and good visual graph.
I was originally looking for the power consumption of some older VGA cards I had in some older PC's to decide if the cards should be replaced to reduce power/heat. I searched but could not find the info until I saw the post by mark84. It was cards like the ATI 9800 Pro and the X800 XT PE. Its good to have info in the list on older cards also IMO.
Thanks for lists.
Lou
A truly good 300-400W power supply(of which there are unfortunately precious few) is more than adequate to run a typical PC unless you have a total power-hungry video card or are running more than one card.
P.S. the older cards run just fine, really. I have a second PC with a X850Xt on it and it runs hi-def videos and so on perfectly fine.

Thanks, but the power supply was not my concern.
I was converting some older PC's to be used for just 2D video stuff like web browsing and office programs. I want to run these PC's very quiet and run the vga cards with fanless heat sinks. So if the cards are wasting too much power and giving off a lot of heat when even just in 2D use (the 9800 seemed to be putting out a lot of heat), then I will try other cards.
According to the list the ATI 9800 Pro uses 31W at idle and the ATI 9600 uses only 9W at idle so the 9800 will be wasting three times as much power for the same use, and it will put out more heat that will need more air flow for cooling the case.
