9800 GTX

They make noise, too.

9800 GTX

Post by falcon26 » Sat Apr 05, 2008 7:35 am

Anyone know just how loud or quiet these new 9800 GTX's are with stock fan?

There haven't been a whole lot of reviews yet that I've seen, but the HardOCP review seemed to indicate the stock cooler was very quiet to them. At the very least, it's quieter than the other cards they compared it to like the 8800GTX. However, what I see is that the 9800GTX draws only 15 watts less than the 8800GTX, so the quiet potential still isn't that much better on the 9800. I have to say, based on the initial review, the 9800 doesn't seem to offer much other than a better stock cooler. Not faster for gaming, not appreciably lower power, just a better stock cooler.

I'm looking for a quiet card for my new gaming rig. 9800 GTX is the front liner right now, so I'd be interested to hear what anyone has to say about it's noise levels too.

Interesting, i'd heard it was a bit of a screamer

like

50db at idle

but that the card stays cooler that way

*shrug*

there's heaps of power going into that card, so i'm not entirely surprised. My take is if you want it ''silent'', you'll need to watercool it.

S1 + 2x120 fans running slowly should be enough. Assuming it's about 50% higher power than an 8800GT that would seem plenty.

If you looking at buying a card specifically because of its noise level, youd be better off getting an Accelero S1 rev 2 (under $30), a low RPM 120mm fan, 4 cable ties and then whatever GPU you want. It should run muich cooler than any stock card and be damn near silent if you stick a SPCR recommended fan on it.

I picked up a 9800GTX so I could put my "old" 320mb 8800 into my brother's PC for him, and it's definately not quiet under load. While idling, it's very quiet, but as soon as the temp on the core exceeds ~63c it starts ramping up - very smoothly, it has to be said, but it does start to make a lof of "rushing air" noise.
I'm contemplating picking up an HR-03 for it, since I can't seem to figure out if an S1 will come with the necessary number of extra heatsinks for the power circuitry and so on.

I too have a similar issue: need to choose a gpu for my new quiet(!) rig. I will definitely throw out the stock cooling and install S1 rev2. So the question is: will S1 rev2 fit on the 9800GTX ? If not, I'll go for 8800GTS + OC possibly.

It looks like the same layout as a G92 card so it should do. Passive may not be enough with that card so the turbo module or a slow 120mm fan would help.

It seems that soon there will be an special dessign for the 9800: The Accelero Xtreme 9800. Here you can see a picture of it and more info:

You might as well just fit a Accelero S1 to the 9800GTX.

Here are some pics and tests showing a 9800GTX with a Thermalright HR-03 GT cooler fitted:

The Accelero S1 uses the same mounting holes so you'll be able to fit it easily. :)

I just bougth an Asus 8800GTS 512MB, which was 194EUR, while it seems the cheapest 9800GTX is about 70EUR more for a ridiculously small performance advantage.

I'd either wait for the 55nm die shrink, or get a 8800GTS 512MB now.

In fact I might sell my current card and upgrade to 55nm for improved power efficiency and thus easier cooling for quieter end result, when they become available.

Ditto. Gotta love 8800GT/GTS512 gone 55nm (9800GT/9900 per rumors) :).

Ok, got the S1 rev.2 in. Got the 9800 disassembled ok, but then I found that it was impossible to cover all of the VRMs with any of the ramsinks included in the pack, or any of the ramsinks I had left from a coupl've HR-03/+ installations. So I chickened out and put back on the stock heatsink until I can figure out a way to sink all of the VRMs =(.

Do you mean there were too many VRM's or just that the sinks were too small?

One of the VRMs has a coupl've very small resistors next to it which prevents use of any of the VRM heatsinks I have - they're all too wide. I note the HR-03GT has a single "thin" heatsink that might fit in there, but I'm not sure.

Also, the S1 rev.2 definately wouldn't have enough sinks as standard to cool everything.

Why not take a hacksaw to the standard 9800GTX cooler to take off the VRM heatsink part of it and screw that on over the VRM's then attach the S1 to the rest of the card? There's plenty of room under an S1 at that end so you should be fine.

I don't particularly like the look of that AC 9800 cooler. It may be longer but it is not as wide so the fin area may actually be less than an S1. Plus the fins are arranged so that you won't get clean front to back airflow with exhaust at the back. Air will just get kicked out of the sides of the thing. I also don't like the look of those fans. Won't be particularly quiet judging by what the 8800GTX version was like.

I think putting an S1 with appropriate VRM and ram sinks on with a pair of slow spinning 120mm fans would both outperform and be quieter than that cooler.
