Undervolt-ability of 8800GT/9600GT?

I'm thinking of one of these two cards to replace my aging 6600GT. Goals are: 1) lower power consumption 2) better 3D performance, in that order.
My current card is both undervolted and underclocked in 2D (amounts to ~10W less than stock at the socket); how would the newer cards compare to my current one?
Keep in mind I'm in no hurry, if the current generation of cards doesn't offer any power consumption improvement, I'd gladly keep mine for some more.

Neither of these cards underclocks or undervolts in 2D by default. Some Gigabyte cards do though.
I've been trying to reprogram the BIOS on my 9600GT to give the 2D underclock/undervolt with no success so far.

An answer and it's not good:
Just to remind the GeForce 9 series mainly work with the Extra mode which is different form all the previous series and don't include a 2D and 3D mode. Now as soon as you start applying a 2D and/or 3D mode you are no longer able to work just fine with the Extra mode which is the main level. So just don't play around these series are no longer using really the 2D and/or 3D mode except one special card from Gigabyte where they added an extra electronic logic to be able to use 2D and Extra mode.

Thank you for your reply, it's very interesting and essentially confirms the feeling I had - that the current crop of cards, despite some indications of the contrary, have little in the way of decreasing power consumption.
The ATI 3850/70 have reasonable 2D draw but nothing spectacular, and besides, last time I saw the Catalyst drivers I didn't like em at all - though TBH the recent development lines in the nVidia drivers suck too IMO.
