Saphire 4850x2

Post by 888rkw888 » Fri Jan 09, 2009 10:24 pm

Just upgraded my pc from an old 9700 pro to a 4850x2! The only problem is, this sucker is loud!!! Anyone have any suggestions on how I could lower the noise in my case? I searched for third party heatsink/fans, but found nothing for the x2. Maybe someone out there knows something that I don't. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

There aren't any aftermarket coolers designed for the x2's as far i a know, the only option is to find 2 heatsinks that are small enough to fit side by side, which will be difficult and come with small whiny fans.

Oh or you could go crazy and get 2 TR HR-03's. Because they can wrap around the board or just hang off it, you could put one of each GPU and have one facing up, one facing down. Although i wouldn't like to bet on how long before the weight rips apart your board.

Not a bad idea, and I guess the front cooler could be something else too, like a S1, if the rear GPU munting isn't too high.
The problem would be the rear GPU if it's too close to the end of the card, then a HR-03 won't fit, although I doubt it.
Getting physical support for the card isn't really hard to do.

Yeah, and from that pic it looks impossible to attach a HR-03 to the rear GPU.

Did it!

Well, I did it. Solved the problem. Got the idea from another guy over the internet and just changed out the stock heatsink/fan with two Zalman vf900's and it is quiet! So if anyone out there is wondering if two Zalman's would fit, they do!

Thanks for all the suggestions.

What if you just removed the shroud + fans and strapped a few quiet 120mm's onto it? Wouldn't be a pretty situation by any means, but you save yourself a lot of $ by reusing the existing heatsinks.

This card has dropped to the $230 range and offers some amazing performance, I have been looking at it recently.

Hi, sounds interesting, can you take a picture?
I found someone else's picture, here.

Nice idea, but I don't think this would apply to the 4870X2, the VF900 is a bit of a mediocre cooler really, and I'd imagine seeing triple-figure load temps at max speed with 4870 GPUs, bearing in mind they use almost half as much power again as the 4850s.

I found a guide to adjusting Sapphire Radeon HD 4850 X2 fan behavior in its BIOS:
