Got a new 9800GT. Would like to make it passive...

They make noise, too.

If it's it possible. If not, then I'll try to quiet it down some.

XFX 9800GT

I also have an old BFG 7950GT OC card. I'd really like to quiet that one down. It's the loudest component in my PCs.

Any suggestions?

Hi,

It certainly looks like it should be possible; as the stock HSF is not even a "2 slot" design. Take a look through the SPCR reviews?

Take a look at any 8800GT thread here. Should be exactly the same.

its basically an 8800GT with a die shrink, and i've been running my 8800GT passively with an AC S1 heatsink for over a year now with no issues.

ASUS 9800GT

I have the Accelero S2, and I would consider using it, except the ASUS stock cooling fan (circular and gold in color) is quieter than the EVGA 9600GT it replaced. At full bore, the fan is much quieter. (Note that I had the older model in a single slot configuration. It has been revised.)

Go figure.

Just thought I would share, in case anyone else out there is thinking about it a 9800GT. The ASUS version is a true Quiet Winner. I was shocked at the improvement.

Yes I know I can always switch to the S2, as I have one, and my system would transition to below 20db silent. I opted not to, because I run folding at home all day long. I have a Lian Li PC-A05B and the GPU runs really hot with F@H and no GPU cooling. Why, because with the A05 the case inverts the Motherboard, and the GPU is at the top where the heat collects. It was a choice...

With F@home paused, you cannot hear my computer. I am in heaven.

Thank you all for your replies. I'll take a look at that 8800GT thread too.
