They make noise, too.

Most PowerEfficient LCD 22" monitor

Post by astrayan » Tue Feb 24, 2009 7:17 pm

It's common to get quite good 19" LCDs which can work around 18-20W when you turn down the brightness. This Viewsonic 920b is about that, and the old 930b could go near 12W.

I am having difficulty upgrading to 22", which is the current norm. (Solar power). The power specs of all monitors is vague and inaccurate. They normally say "typical", or "max", and these figures are pulled out of their arse anyway.

If you have a power meter and can measure your 22" LCD with the brightness turned down, I'd like to know about it.

(Also, if you have any good info.)

Thanks.

I've found digitalversus to be good for comparing useful energy numbers of different monitors that have been tested. They even have my Samsung 2253BW which whines/whistles at any brightness except between 30-40% or 90-100%. Thankfully I use it at 33% and don't notice any noise it makes above the sound of the EeeBox it's plugged into.

Another place that might have useful numbers is the Energy Star site, but it's best to search by brand than model as they are listed differently on their site.

Anyways, here are the numbers of my Samsung 2253BW:
(All results are at 75% Contrast)

0% Brightness = 19-20W

20% = 20-21W
25% = 22-23W
30% = 24W
33% = 24-25W
40% = 26-27W
50% = 29-30W

90% = 38-39W
100% = 38-40W

It uses up to 2W more power displaying pure black than pure white, which I guess is normal for a TN based monitor such as this.

EDIT:
Ok, I just realised that my monitor isn't being sold anymore, so the numbers I posted are pretty useless. At least the newer models should be more efficient.

The LG W2252TE is said to only draw 22W (at which brightness?) according to the manufacturer but as usual I'd take this with a grain of salt and have a look at a review including power consumption tests first. According to Energy Star it draws 20.8W.

By the way – does anyone know a site that allows to find the monitor with the lowest power consumption? digitalversus only allows to select two to compare, kinda hard that way. Energy Star doesn't allow to sort by that either.

Thanks, guys.

It's good that Samsungs are about right. The LG 2252TQ-PF is listed at 40W "normal", although one of that series was supposed to be the most power efficient.

We are now waiting for White LED LCD monitors.

The LG-w1941s(19 inch smaller model) actually does 21W at full brightness. So that their 22 inch is about the same is believable.

These are pulled out of the Energystar PDF
http://downloads.energystar.gov/bi/qpli ... d_list.pdf

However, the trick is trying to get this to meet up with any model you can buy.

These just showed up on the Dell Australia site at $509 for the 22" and $739 for the 24"

With the current AU$1 being worth around US$0.65 plus about 10% markup, I would believe $399 and $599 to be somewhat more reasonable than the 40% markup Dell Australia seems to think we are willing to pay.

Hopefully this is just a pricing error as these screens could be the most efficient of the currently available options.

Looks like someone at Dell Australia must have read my previous post, as they've updated their prices to $389 for the 22" and $549 for the 24". With a further 10% discount for RACV/NRMA membership, these are starting to look tempting.

Now, I just need to influence the government to accidently send me a double stimulus payment... sometime around next week would be nice.
