They make noise, too.

Radeon HD 5670?

Post by frostedflakes » Mon Nov 02, 2009 2:35 pm

When can we expect to hear more about these cards? I was kind of debating between getting an HD 4670 (the Sapphire Ultimate seems to be highly recommended, but difficult to find in the US) or waiting for more info on these if they're going to be available within the next month or two. Hopefully they will have similar or better power requirements than the HD 4670, which was about 10w idle and 50w load. And surely they won't have quad display like the 5700 and 5800 series, dual display should be adequate for a more mainstream card.

They are not supposed to be released until 1Q 2010. These are the cards I'm interested in also (5670/50, 5550, 5350).

Anny news on upcomming cards? Im hoping for a passive "low profile" HD5650 :)

Still almost nothing is known about these cards (or the chips that power them).
It is confirmed however (IIRC) these will also support Eyefinity (more than 2 displays) - AMD stated actually this feature was driven by notebook requirements (for instance you could have 2 internal displays and still 2 external ones), hence it would not make sense to have this feature only in high-end chips probably. Wouldn't be surprised though to see this feature skipped at least in some cards, surely these will be single slot and you can't fit 2 dvi + dp (or maybe you can - 1 dvi + 1 hdmi + 1 dp should be no problem however).
I wouldn't necessarily bet on low profile 56xx cards.

We have low profile 4650 today, so im hoping :)

Probably there will be all kinds of cards, dual/singleslot. DVI, HDMI dp. and support for 4 displays on some cards.

Oh, wasn't aware these exist. I think though these appeared a lot later than the "normal" 4650, and they seem to be a bit rare still. So yes I guess you could be right 5650 might appear as low profile. If it's not a reference design though you'd probably again need to wait a bit.

Quite possible though again might take 2-3 months or so before non-reference cards appear after launch (I still haven't seen a single non-reference 57xx/58xx card, except different coolers and 512MB versions of the 5750, though even in this case I think it used the same pcb).

Of course, just when I wrote this non-reference cards appear - asus HD5750 formula apparently uses non-ref pcb. http://ht4u.net/reviews/2009/asus_eah57 ... index6.php
It's definitely worse in every aspect to reference layout except probably manufacturing cost (no eyefinity because of single-i/o shield despite 2 slots, high idle power consumption due to not lowering clocks/voltages as much as other cards), but nevertheless the first card using different pcb.

Here is some data on my system's power consumption with XFX HD5670 512MB:

AC power consumption with no video card:
Idle: 50W
Prime95: 102W

AC power consumption with 5670 installed:
Idle: 67W
Prime95: 118W
Furmark: 111W
Prime95 + Furmark: 177W

Prime 95 test using "In-place large FFTs" and 2 threads.
Furmark is set to "Stability Test", "Xtreme" and full-screen 1920 x 1080.
