Passive Accelero L2: how many slots?

They make noise, too.

Passive Accelero L2: how many slots?

Post by line » Wed Dec 16, 2009 3:58 am

I have an old GF 7300 card with a whining cooler and I would like to get the L2 for it. Accoding to AC it is compatible.

One important consideration is that the motherboard has two PCI-E x1 slots under the PEG slot and I would rather not block the second slot because I expect it to be used in the future.

If I recall correctly (I could be mistaken), L2 with the fan on is a triple-slot solution, meaning it blocks 2 more motherboard slots. If I take out the fan, can I free up the second slot?

If not, maybe I would be better off with the S1/2?

The fan adds 20mm. Yes, would be 2 slot, not 3. But it has little space between the fins, S2 must be better.

Thanks for your confirmation! If anyone knows to the contrary please let me know.

I belive a passive L2 can cope with the GF 7300. It has a large body and the card seems to put out little heat.

The S2 is at the same price of the S1 here (both are $8 more than the L2), so I might as well get the S1... obviously an overkill but I don't see a clearance issue and I could always reuse it.

I doubt L2's efficiency without fan cooling. I've witnessed a 4670 being cooled by L2 adequately -- 65~70'c under full load which led me to believe fanless was impossible. That said, you may be fine with fanlessif you don't plan on playing games or stressing the 7300.

The 7300 is as hot as a northbridge chip by today's standards. The L2 will be fine on such a low-end chip. :D
