[Higher temperatures] in the name of silence?

They make noise, too.

[Higher temperatures] in the name of silence?

Post by kiblams » Fri Feb 25, 2011 4:21 am

I am considering slowing my ATI 5770 fan when it is under load to reduce the noise it creates, at the moment the settings I have are 25% idle (28-30c) and 40% load (66-67c). I use Furmark to test the temperatures under load, although in games like BF:BC2 the max temperature never exceeds 57c at 40%.

The fan becomes audible at 35% though even at 40% it needs to be the middle of the night in silence to be heard at all, but 35% seems to be the sweet spot.

The issue is that at 35% the temp can reach 75-80c using furmark, and with games becomming more optimised to use all of the cards resources like Furmark does; is 80c going to harm the card in the long run?

Cheers for any help guys.

No game is ever gonna be as demanding as Furmark. That's why Furmark testing is considered by many to be meaningless.

Go ahead, lower your fan speed. Under 60c in games is a waste of silence. 80c would be fine for games.

I agree 35% is gonna be just fine when gaming. ~80 at full furmark load doesn't seem so high to me, as most video cards can run at 100+ according to specs.

Hey guys, thanks for the replies.

I have been doing some research and also some more testing with my card, at 90% of all the reviews for the 5770 that mention temperatures put it running at 77-80c under load. I plan to keep mine under that still and have found that at 32% fan power I can maintain 74-76c with Furmark, and ~65c in games.

While this is a great result, since I have installed a new Xigmatek s193 heatsink on my CPU the 220mm case fan which ramps up according to the CPU temp (no system fan control available on my M/B) is running alot slower and so the heat produced by the hotter graphics card is not being pushed as quickly from the case and all system components are getting hotter. :(

I will have a play around with the fan speed profile to find a happy medium for load RPMs to keep the whole case cool.

My notebook's Mobility 5870, which is the same chip as your 5770, will break 100C in Furmark. Anything under 100C is fine in my opinion if you are after maximum quiet.

You could also most likely put a Accelero S1 on there and run completely passively. It can handle the heat of a 3870 and 8800GT so a 5770 should be no problem.

Yeah, I am ditching my 5770 this week due to a super loud annoying fan. Why can't manufacturers make a 2-slot card that uses adapters and a really large grill to exhaust all the heat out the back. Maybe it would be more expensive to have to use an adapter to DVI, but it would be so worth it.

I find the cooler is very quiet (if not silent) at 35% on mine, and 25% speed which it runs at out of games is bliss :D

I found out how to get Speedfan to control my second PWM socket on the MB so the side case fan can do it's bit now.
