They make noise, too.

dual radeon 6870 or single 6950

Post by dfn » Sat Aug 20, 2011 9:16 am

I was thinking about either buying two 6870s or a single 6950. I've read a bit and it seems the consensus is that the MSI Hawk or the XFX Black Edition would be best for noise when it comes to the 6870. I am curious, if I get 2x Hawk or 2x Black Edition, would they be much louder than a single 6950? Does anyone have comparisons?
I don't know what the "quiet" 6950 cards are, but if I go with the 6870s, it would either be Hawk or Black Edition. How do two of those compare to any 6950 in terms of noise?

Whenever you go Crossfire/SLI, one of the cards is starved for air due to the close placement (unless you have a triple gpu mobo and can separate the cards). This means that card will rev up the fan much higher in order to keep the card cool - or that card will run much hotter for a given rpm. Opt for a single card solution, unless there is some performance driven reason why you absolutely need to go crossfire.

Also, CF (and SLI) are a nightmare for fanmanagement in MSI's Afterburner, once you OC.

Go with one. Two cards will have problems with microstuttering too.
